I am sure that like many here I have a large collection of trains squirreled in various places sometimes this hunt is infuriating. I read about a product called StickNFind in Make Magazine that may be perfect for this problem. These are Bluetooth enabled stickers that your smartphone with thier app can locate in space. Now they are pricey but in the future maybe you could put one sticker under the car and one in the proper box so it could be easily returned.

Also I'm sure there are train operation applications as well with train orders, waybillsand so on. Pretty cool idea.

The SickNFinds are currently about $25.00 each.

Amazon is taking pre orders for a similar product called Tile. Due out summer of 2014. My wife pre ordered 4 of them for $60.00. Still not at the price range for tagging our toy trains but in time I'm sure they will be. Tile is not Bluetooth.

The future holds so many cool things to come.  My wife imagines a time when I never misplace my keys. Tile is the answer. Rarely do I run around the house looking for my train when I'm late for something.

I wonder if this would work on my kids?Originally Posted by Silver Lake:

The thread title reminded me of a job my wife and I did a few years ago.  We were asked to take down a HUGE room-sized layout (An addition had been built onto the house immediately adjacent to the kitchen for the layout...about 25'X15', I'd estimate.) for a widow.  The poultry wire and plaster mountains in two corners had certainly NOT been designed for access to the track going through them.

Anyhow, once we had made our way to the corners and tore into the mountain we discovered a whole train lying on its side adjacent to the track!  It was heavily dust-covered...obviously residing there for a very long time!  Best we could figure was that the train hit the curve in the tunnel too fast, and just laid over.  The gent probably deferred doing something about fishing it out due to its inaccessibility...or sat down to dinner, took a nap, only to forget about it altogether!!! (Lord knows he had plenty of other trains to distract him!!)

So, I guess what I'm adding to this thread as a possible choice: Tear down your layout and rebuild it every so often.  You might be surprised what you find along the tracks...or within 'them thar hills'!!
