Could someone tell me if the silver paint on the front of SP locomotives is for better visibility? I don't know where I heard it, but I was just wondering if that is the purpose of the paint.
Yes, for better visibility by MOTORISTS & PEDESTRIANS, what with all the grade crossings in California. Even at night or in the fog the front of the locomotive stands out. That is also the reason SP added the forward facing air horns, beginning with the GS-4 class in 1941, as well as the Mars Lights. Later Cab Forwards also had air horns.
