About a year ago I acquired a used MTH RK PS2 Y6B, Item no. 30-1438-1.  I also bid on a PS3 production sample version, item no. 30-1662-1, from a recent MTH auction.  I bid low since I didn’t need another Y6B.  While I was certain I would be outbid, to my surprise I am now a proud owner of a second Y6B.  Problem is each of these engines has issues.  I was able to correct some of them myself, but a couple of issues remain I could use some help / advice with.

I’ll start with the PS2 version (30-1438-1).  This model had poor slow speed performance since I got it. Not so bad I felt compelled to return it, but I was disappointed it didn’t operate smoothly at slow speed like my other MTH steamers.  I was worried there was a mechanical issue with the drive, but decided to tackle the project and see if a grease / lube job would help.  I used Labelle products to add grease to the gearboxes and a tiny touch of oil to each axle bearing.  What a difference!  The model now has the slow speed performance I’ve come to expect from MTH.  Thrilled that was such an easy fix.

However, this model has a troublesome smoke unit I have not been able to correct.   When at rest, smoke billows out the stack in typical MTH fashion.  However, when in the motion the smoke volume diminishes until it is downright anemic.  Thick vapor oozes out the stack, but does not billow like a typical MTH model.  At rest the smoke volume once again billows out the stack.  I replaced the smoke unit wick and made sure the new batting did interfere with the small hole for the fan output, but the same behavior exists.  Any ideas as to what is going on or how to fix it?

On to the PS3 version, item no. 30-1662-1.  This model was listed as a pre-production version that was “approved with comments.”  I was happy that the model fired up with no problem when I received it.  However, the class lights, cab light, and firebox glow did not work.  While these features are not important to me, I decided to open up the model and see what I could do.  Sure enough, there was a broke wire to one of the class lights.  After a quick fix the class lights and cab light now work (although the class lights are very dim).  The firebox glow still does not work, but as I said this is of little consequence to me.

The other issue with this model that is important to me is the chuff sounds.  The PS2 version has great articulated steam chuff sounds where the front and rear engines go in and out of sync.  The effect is quite convincing.  The PS3 version smokes like a champ, but the chuffs are the same as a two-cylinder loco without the four-cylinder effects of the PS2 version.  Is this a sound file issue?  Could it be corrected by loading a new sound file?  If so, is that something a newbie like myself can tackle or do you recommend shipping it off to be serviced by an MTH authorized dealer?

So ends my tale.  Help / advise appreciated.

THe first smoke issue may be a loose impeller on the fan motor that stop spinning when it is being pulsed for puffing.  In neutral it runs all the time.  Drop of super glue can fix it, or a hot tip of a solder iron to melt the center to tighten up on the shaft.

Yes try a loading the sound file again, or you can adjust the chuff rate with DCS, or try a different sound file.  Keep the same chainfile.  Not hard to do if you have the computer and cord too do it.  G

Thanks for the replies.  Yes, I am using the full DCS and I can adjust the chuff rate.  But I still don’t get the articulated chuff effects on the PS3  erosion that I get with the PS2 version.  I’ll try to load a new sound file.  Will be a first fo me, but willing to give it a go.  First step will be to get the right cable.  Can you explain what the “chain file “ is?

Hi GGG.  It took a few tries, but I was finally able to successfully load the sound file for my PS3 engine following the directions from the MTH website.  Unfortunately there was no change in the chuff effect.  Not that the the effect is bad, but I really think the multi-cylinder articulated effect in the PS2 version is cool.  I wonder if this is a unique characteristic of the PS3 preproduction engine or is it common to this item number in general.  I would love to hear from someone else who has this engine.  My PS2 version is 3V.  If I understand you correctly, I could load the sound file from that engine into my PS3 version?  Maybe that will give me the effect I want?    On the bright side, the firebox glow is working so all PS3 features and sounds are restored.

I have not gotten around to tinkering with the smoke unit on the PS2 version.  That will be next weekend's project.  I let you know what I find.

Yes they are, but they are not compatible with the new windows system. You can't open them, but instead you save them to a folder.  Then address them from there with loader.  Right click and save target or save file and know where you are saving it too.  Make sure system keeps the extension .mth.  If it changes, rename program after saving it with the ".mth".  G

I couldn't get the PS2 Y6B file to download from the MTH website so I tried the RK SP 4-8-8-2 cab forward PS3 sound file for the  in my PS3 Y6B.  Sure enough this sound file has articulated steam chuff sounds where the front and rear engines go in and out of sync.  I was pleased to see the smoke puffs are timed with the chuffs as they should be with this new sound file.  The whistle has a different sound, but since I don't know that either sounds exactly like the prototype the new whistle is fine by me.   Speed control seems consistent with the Y6B sound file.  I'm surprised MTH didn't include the articulated chuff effect in the PS3 Y6b, but I'm happy with my engine now that it is loaded with the 4-8-8-2 sounds.

I also opened the PS2 to see if I could fix the smoke unit as GGG suggested.  Sure enough, the fan impeller was very loose on the fan motor shaft.  I added a tiny amount of CA glue on the shaft and reinstalled the impeller, but I made matters worse.  The CA I used was old and maybe didn't dry completely and by disturbing the impeller I likely made it looser.  I will try again later this weekend with fresh glue.  Despite my failed first repair attempt, at least I'm confident of the source of the problem!

GGG, really appreciate your help with these locos.  Folks like you who help others enjoy this hobby are what make this forum so fantastic.  Merry Christmas to you and family.

Great glad you got it to work! great forum here and there is always many tech's to help anyone that needs help. enjoy your new toys for Christmas ! buy the way Scott you could have down loaded your ps 2 sound file from your ps2 engine that had the correct sound file you wanted into your computer ! and then sent to you ps 3 engine !

Hi Alan.  I considered doing exactly what you suggested - downloading the sound file from my PS2 version and using that in my PS3 Y6b.  However, when I started the download process the SW indicated my PS2 Y6b has a 5 volt board.  GGG indicated that the sound file needs to be from a 3 volt PS2 board to be compatible with a PS3 loco so I decided to not keep going with the process.  I do like the sound file in the PS2 Y6b though.   Confirmation on comparability or not with a PS3 board appreciated.

Hi Scott.

I'm confused .          "The SW indicated my PS2  Y6b has a 5 volt board  "  ....................."  the SW indicated that the sound file needs to be from a 3 volt PS2 board "  ???

From info I've been able to get ,you should have a 3 volt.      MTH 30-1438 has a square 2 pin charging port under the tender when looking at the owner manual photo usually indicating a 3 volt board.  🤔               By  the MTH site it shows your locomotive  listed in the 2007 Vol. 1 catalog ....well within the area of 3 volt board installation.🤔

Would the download process need to be repeated a couple times to be assured of the correct info between the source and the engine. ?

Thanks for the inputs from both of you.  When it comes to what board I have, the confusion is likely all mine!  Forgive me as I learn how to tell the difference between a 3V board and a 5V PS2 board.  Yes, this model has a 2 pin charging port on the tender.  i assume that is an indicator this is a 3V board.  Maybe the consumer loader SW incorrectly identified the model as having a 5 V board?

GGG, I have been unsuccessful in every attempt to download the PS2 file from the MTH website.  I do not see a download file option, instead the file opens immediately and displays gibberish.

The good news is I'm not at all in a bad spot.  the fist video below is the PS3 Y6B with the stock sound file.  Note the simple 4 chuffs per revolution.

PS3 Y6B Stock Sound File

Here is the same PS3 Y6B with the PS3 4-8-8-2 Cab Forward sound file.  Note the 4- cylinder chuff effect (chuff rate is also set to 4).  The effect is very similar to the PS2 sound file, although the chuffs are a little more "tinny."

It still surprises me that MTH took a step backward with the Y6B sound file when they went from the PS2 version to the PS3.  In the end I'm in a good spot as I mentioned. Now that both models are fully functional I will likely sell the PS2 version.  It an awesome model, but I don't really need two of these!

With changes to window you do not try to open them, instead you right click and "save file or save target or save link".  Watch where it is saved to...download usually.  But could default somewhere else.  And make sure it saves with .mth as extension, not html or something else.  If it does by default, just rename the extension to mth.   G
