Adding Head/Tail Lights to DT&I 8111 Switcher

Simple project for a simple switcher right? Put an LED in the front and the rear sockets. Switcher has manual F-N-R switch. No E-Unit. Wanted directional lighting so I wired front headlight to the F terminal and the rear light to the rear. Easy-Peasy except that both lights are on whether the unit is switched to forward or reverse. What am I missing? Thanks everyone. BTW, happy Turkey Day to all.

Did this switcher have directional lighting to start with? If you’re talking about the Lionel 6-8111, it didn’t. Did you install circuitry to make that possible?
