Hi guys, I own a 1688e Lionel lines loco and was just wondering if I could add a smoke unit. Is it easy? I'm a novice and was just wondering. I saw someone add one to the same engine but it was fan driven. Can any one give me a diagram on were to connect and how much a smoke unit would typically cost amd how to wire it? Thanks!

The locomotive does not have any mounting for a smoke unit, so you would have to custom make it. There is no crosshead and piston rod to activate a pill type unit to make it puff. Fan driven units are different. Some may work at track voltage, and others work at less than track voltage taken from circuit boards inside the locomotive. The simplest type of smoke unit to install would be to stuff a Seuthe unit down the stack. It will not puff, but you will get some smoke. In any case, you probably will need to remove the headlight to get a smoke unit in. There may be forum members or businesses that may do a custom install for you.
