I have an MTH Berkshire 2-8-4. I've finished setting up my track layout and now am ready to purchase the transformer-I don't know what I'm doing-no experience. I'm considering Lionel KW 190 watt but don't want overkill. I'll only be running the one train and welcome any advice.

I would just get a nice modern Z-1000. A MTH transformer for a MTH train with a bell and whistle button and good circuit protection for a modern engine. The older postwar transformers circuit breakers are too slow for a modern engine.
That sounds like good old fashioned sound advice . . . hard to come by these days . . . AND, I'll take it!
