I'm a O scale 2 rail modeler, but my love of model trains started with an American Flyer 561 PRR K5 set  Santa left under the tree Christmas in 1947.  My parents say they bought it new at a local toy store that year, so I suspect it was an "undesirable" leftover as by that date AF had moved to 2 rail S gauge. At the stairwell to my railroad room I want to display a train like my first set.  My quest started out nicely with the eBay purchase of an excellent + 561 locomotive and tender.  The hunt for the set's freight cars has not gone as well.  The cars I'm looking for are a 476 green gondola, 478 white/red box car, 480 orange Shell tank car, and 484 Caboose.  The listed on eBay typically are heavily scratched and the decals are often discolored.  Question - are decals and suitable paints available to restore pre-war 3/16th scale AF tinplate cars.

Try Portlines Hobbies is a source of paint and decals. I believe that they have both in reasonable matches.

Having suggested the above, the cars you are looking for are the 400 series Gilbert sheet metal cars and are actually fairly common. Finding the tanker in nice shape is a bit tougher. These cars in reasonable condition show up readily at York, which is a possible source if you are a TCA member. Or, a member can sponsor a (once only) visit for a non-member.

Hope this helps.
