Is it OK to install a longer cable? (six to eight feet) If so.. where do I go and what do I ask for?

I know the one I purchased for a friend came from Radio Shack a few years ago . Since we no longer have RS here north of the border I think, but not completely sure the link is the correct cable.http://www.radioshack.com/prod...=2102679#tabsetBasic
People have posted here about 25 foot and longer AIU cables, so I'd have to say that a longer cable will probably work. 
The cable you want will be labeled as a cross-over cable, see image below. Note that the wire colors are reversed in the connectors, the blue is at pin 1 on one end and pin 6 on the other end. Just make sure the cables are wired as indicated and it should work.

And did it work? 
I have one that goes from AIU number 1 to AIU number 2 that is 37 feet away. No problem. I have done one 42 feet away with no problem on a friends layout. I would think someone will chime in with a longer run. The total limit is only a guess.
