Postwar experts: I am confused about Lionel's 216 M&StL (not Burlington) Alco A engine offered in 1965. Did it or did it not come with a factory installed horn in all units? Until John Schmid's book came out, I have never heard of this engine having a horn from any collectors guide. But in John's book, there is a photograph of the engine in a set that clearly shows the horn relay in the cab, along with a battery powered 147 horn control. How could have all the collectors guides since 1970 missed this,or were more made without the battery powered horn?
Anyone with information or speculation?
Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,

You bring up some great points.  One of the things I've heard over the years is "these trains have been out for 50+ years, everything has been written about Postwar."  Then I tell them to read my publications

I'm in awe of all the great research my colleagues have done over the years.  It takes years of heavy lifting and late nights reading through catalogs, service station manuals, archive observations, interviews with former employees, real world observations of the trains, and so on.

Research is a never ending process driven by passion, curiosity, nostaglia, challenge and yes some insanity.

What changed with Project Roar Publishing was access to the actual production and manufacturing records from Lionel or as I call them the "cheat sheets".  Hence the 216P-25 from 1965.  Yes, it did come with a Horn.  In fact it is the same Alco as the 212P-25 (Santa Fe) from 1964.  Lionel actually re-typed/copied the 212P-25 Production Control file for the 216P-25.  They even made the mistake of re-typing "Santa Fe" and then later crossing it out with pencil.  Pretty cool.

The 216P-25 with Horn came in two promotional outfits 19454-500 (1965) and 19571 (1966).

Once again, thanks for supporting Project Roar and keep reading.  You'll find lot's more goodies not documented anywhere else.

Enjoy,

John Schmid

CW,

Thanks.  We have couple books in the works, but nothing far enough along to announce yet.  I will definitely do so on this board when we're further along.

Any particular topics you'd be interested in seeing published?

FYI, we just launched our Facebook page and I'm going to start posting some stuff there.  I'm going to a friends house tomorrow for something really cool...he's opening up a sealed set from the 50's.  This is only the 2nd time that I've seen an "old" sealed outfit opened.  We're going to video and hopefully he'll let me post.  I also have the original Lionel production records for the outfit so we're going to compare.  Once again...hopefully he'll let me post the video.

Thanks for all the support.

Regards,

John
