hey i saw a 1930's american flyer zephyr the other day. it was not in good shape. i would have said it was very well played with. it needs to be rewired, cleaned. and just about everything else. it also came with a windup train. a few cars also. they are all o gage. do any of you guys and gals have any ideas of the value of it. it is lithograph and it is well worn. they are asking $150 for it. it needs tons of work. is it worth the effort to put in to it?

I did some work on a flyer zephyr for a friend. The locomotive flanges were so thick that it would not go through any Lionel switches. I did not check it with any other switches. I assume that it would go through the old Flyer switches. Flyer made several versions of the zephyr and I don't know if this is true for all of them. The one that I worked on was cast aluminum.
ok. it looks like it was sheet metal. it could be AL but do not know. i did not buy it. just wondering what it could be worth if i did and fixed it up.
Way to much for a tin one that is in rough shape.
Steve
ok thanks
I know this is a tinplate forum, but I have to ask.
Was it tinplate or extruded aluminum ? It will make a big difference in the value .
Mackb4, his initial post mentioned it was lithographed, making it tin. Flyer made so many of both, and they are readily available, such that you would be hard pressed to recoup any parts put into it...either type.
Clean, original, boxed versions still bring good money however.
it is tin and not extruded aluminum. and this one is far from"clean, original," deff no boxes. i would say at best it is a c5 or less. so it is in bad shape.
C5 regardless of whether there are all the cars...basically parts. You cant really redo the litho. You could paint it of course, and not lose any value if you got it cheap enough.
how cheap is cheap enough??
TD,
For me, the max number would be $20. Your call on the number, we all see value differently!
i was thinking the same number
Sorry Rob,I over read that part I guess
I have the extruded aluminum set and love it.
The set would look good customized ,but $150.00 seems a little to much being a loss of lithograph .
