I have seen some American Flyer #1122 tin 4 wheel passenger cars online that look a lot like Marx 4 wheel cars, but maybe longer. I was wondering about the size of these AF cars. Would they look good pulled by a Marx Commodore Vanderbilt?
Thanks!

The bodies are 6 1/2 inches long. The T couplers add a 1 /2 inch on each end. I'm still looking for a very nice red one to match the two I own. They come in at least one other color scheme.

Andy, they're the perfect size. Lewrail, the red cars that have the number 1123 are hard to find in real nice shape...good luck!
I especially like the 8 wheel versions of this series, freight & passenger. Yes, they look good with Marx motive power.

These are the variations of this style of car that I have in my collection.
This last one is suspect. I haven't seen any other 8 wheel versions of this car.
I really like those Flyer cars.
Cool Greg! I forgot about the 1223 cars!
Got a set four cars recently. They're on the crusty side, but I plan to repaint them to match my smokin' copper Commodore. Trying to figure a way to make into an observation car.
Andy
Not all observations had platforms. A red light on the back would work.

I was thinking of making something like the Flyer Hiawatha beaver tail on the rear car. But just adding a red light would be a lot easier! LOL
A friend just gave me her late husband's train set, it has a 2-4-0 loco with an automatic whistle, which can be shut off, a tender and four red 1123 cars with two four wheel trucks. A little oil and cleaning and away it went, rattling as only tinplate can rattle. What a nice gift!

Another option would be to use a red Marx jewel and ring from a Marx crossing etc. Keeps it real toy like and no wires or pick ups.
Steve
those will be great Andy

That would be cool!

You may be able to find a rhinestone or sequin that size at a fabric store that would work too if you don't want to cannibalize a crossing gate. While you're there, they may still have a few Christmas village items on clearance.

Just got back from WalMart (wife works there - get discount!) and found little jewels like that in the craft department. Got a bag of assorted colors in a size similar to the Marx jewels and a bag of smaller ones that might work for marker lights on cabooses or locos.
Don't want to get too crazy with this stuff. Folks'll start callin' me Rhinestone Cowboy!
I have used those jewels for faux headlights on the Lumar floor trains. NAPA makes a dash pilot light that is a 12-volt illuminated jewel that threads into the bulb housing. # DL-6192. They have several other small indicator lights with chrome bezels for toggle switches in red, green and yellow that could be powered by a battery. They fit into a 3/8 hole. #TGA-10, TGA-20 and TGA-30.
