This engine belonged to my dad and has not ran since before 1960.I am sending it away for repair to run again and plan to get an oval of track on eBay and power it with a Lionel CW-80 transformer I have already. I have read to keep the voltage below 15 volts. Is it really okay to do this or should I invest in another transformer? I have had a hard time finding recommendations for a modern transformer to run this engine. I have never ran an S Gauge train before,if I enjoy this engine I might just build a real S Gauge layout.

Its safe to run with the CW-80.

You can run it all the way to 18 volts if you like. The big Gilbert transformers went to 18 volts, while the majority of the smaller ones went to 15 volts.
Okay, thanks for the help LionelTin and RoyBoy.Since I don't have any track yet I am considering getting an oval of Gargraves wood tie track, especially since I don't have to buy a transformer. Guess I would have to go with their tinplate S track with an American Flyer engine?
Gargraves track works great. Too bad you are not closer. I have a big box of Flyer track in my give away pile for the train show in San Jose today.
