Looks like it could be an American Flyer #401 from 1940

It is a 401 style. Came in black or gray.

I just fished this one out of the bay, and it was DOA when I got it. Spent the day tinkering with it, and now she runs like a little bunny. Came with the cars listed for the Pioneer Freight Set, but missing the 478. It had two of the green 476 gondolas.
One of the truck wheels looks a little rotten, and the main wheels may be replacements I am thinking. Anyway, interesting old lady!
