Hi,
I have a 1935 American Flyer prewar O gauge Burlington Zephyr that is in poor condition. Can anyone recommend how to polish the cast aluminum? Are there any reproduction decals for the 9900?

Mothers mag wheel polish, Simichrome, or a rag buffing wheel.
Don't try to clean it chemically as some of those chemicals are too harsh and will etch the aluminum, like one that came from eBay a few years back.
The decals are available, but I don't remember where. American Flyer vendors would know.

I'll second Simichrome - I've cleaned up a Flyer Zephyr and about 2 dozen AMT/KMT aluminum passenger cars with it and it does an excellent job.
I used to buy Flyer prewar parts from Ron Leventon - you might try him for the decals:

Doug Peck would be another good source to ask:
Thanks, I'll give the Simichrome a try.

Have plenty of old cotton t-shirts/towels handy. Work small areas at a time - the first pass or two will pull off hideous looking black gunk, it will take a couple tries for the black to stop coming off - lots of work, but those shells will shine like a chrome toaster when finished.
I believe Jeff Kane - the Train Tender has the decals.
Also I have used a buffing wheel on a motor arbor with polishing compound( the kind that looks like an inch think crayon) to polish the cast shells of the 9900.
Slow work even with this.
Erierailroad,
Please post some pictures when your done.
I recently got a set of decals and the exhaust stack from Doug at Port Lines Hobby Supplies.
Thanks for the good info. Some one way back modified it to accept a Lionel 3 axle steam engine chassis, instead of the AF 2 axle motor. What is the chances of me finding an original motor for this?

I just posted one on the big auction site. It works fine, I replaced it so I could run it on my layout with Ross track and switches. The wheel flanges were too deep. It was my Dad’s engine.
