I am not an AF expert but I think you may run into a problem with coupler styles. The pre-war(before WW-2)couplers might be box & pin, verses post-war(after WW-2) being knuckle couplers. So check on the couplers before making any attempt to purchase the AF engine.
I'd go with a 1681 Hudson. It's a 2-6-2 (rear truck looks like a 4 but is really a 2). I would then either convert a 6464 coupler to match to the AF tender vs. the other way. There may even be a conversion coupler available from Port Lines or Olsen's.
