American Model Trains Aluminum Passenger Cars

Got a set of these with Santa fe plates. The tops are definitely polished, but the sides are somewhat dull. They have been wet and have some pitting on the side on a few of the cars. Were these mostly shiny when new. To get rid of the pitting and water damage, I will end up making them shiny. Any thoughts?
