I recently bought a collection while in Florida that included Lionel, Marx, and some American Flyer. Someone did some creative development with what was probably originally a Royal Blue engine, tender, boxcar, and passenger car. The set runs and turned out pretty well, although a little rough here and there. Not sure if the boxcar should go before or after the passenger car, but its a fantasy anyway. Thought you all might enjoy.

Gotta admit it's pretty sharp! Did they sell it like that originally? With that boxcar and passenger car?
This is the way I found it in the collection. Definitely home made by a previous owner. The blue paint underneath the engine and tender lead me to believe it was originally a #350 Royal Blue engine. I'm not sure if the car is from the royal blue set as that set would have had a couple more cars.
I bought this from a guy who was basically an accumulator. I wouldn't even say a collector. There was a lot of Marx and Lionel included, some nice and some not so nice. There is even a Lionel 2534 aluminum passenger car with a 2533 Silver Bluff plate on it. I think it is probably a factory error as it does not appear the plate was replaced but who can tell after all these years.
Anyway, the yellow Pacific Type with the box car and passenger car do look nice and sharp. I'll have to decide what to do with it.
Cool. I'm clueless on this era of product even though I do think it's pretty awesome.
This kind of piece may not have that "mint" value but I love a piece with a mysterious backstory like this.
The Royal blue is pre-1952, the S gauge version was part of a freight set. The pre-war Royal blue had a set of sheet metal passenger cars, I think Gilbert missed by not offering this in an all blue passenger set, that same locomotive was part of the circus set but in red paint.

Interesting home made set. The engine used was a later run 1948 350, the tender sides are not indented as on the very early runs. It was not a 1950 353 Circus engine because that engine did not have wire handrails. The cars are just standard Gilbert link coupler cars repainted with new decals. It shows what can be done with a little creativity.
Here are some pictures of the originals, including the 1948 Royal Blue set with cars.
