I will be in need of a lot of trees, all sizes and kinds. I do have a small box full of trees from our old layout but they all seem to short. I found on Pintrest a video of a HO modeler making trees out of flower wire. So I am in the process of making a O scale one. The price is right but you can expect some time in making these. I know their is a hundred ways to make trees but I did like how this guy made his and the looks. My first few won't look to hot but a great learning tool for my future forest.
First what you need to make the tree minus foliage. I used 22 gauge and 28 gauge floral wire, rubber mold, wire nippers, needle nose pliers and a paint brush. I cut 10 strands of 22 gauge wire 26 inches long and 5 strands of the 28 gauge at 26 inches too. Laid all the strands together, bent in the middle and twisted the strands about half the length. this will be your trunk of the tree. For the upper branches I separated the wires into 2 and 3 strands and continue to twist together. Then separate the wire into single strands and looped them. Then cut the loops to create single, smaller branches. finish all the upper branches, don't worry about what shape they are in now you will bend them to their desired shape later. For the roots I tightened the loop at the bottom, then cut the loop in the middle. Same as the top I split the wires up but in larger clumps, twist the groups together and form. with the tree formed in the shape you want I apply the latex molding over the trunk, roots and branches. I did 3 coats. More to come later. Nick T
