Before you tell me 3rd-rail has released the locomotive........   I know they did, but I want mine with legacy.........   So what you may ask am I cutting apart........  Well just a couple of Lionel F unit shells.....   Before I started this project I needed to make a tool to alow me to cut and sand my joints so I had nice tight joints

After I positioned the cutting/sanding jig where I wanted I inserted some nylon screw to hold the jig in position cut and sanded perfect

As you can see a nice tight joint, I added some thin styrene behind the joint to add a little strength

I am now working on some of the inserts I need in the roof, I am currently 3-d printing some test prints to check fit before I add detail and send to Shapeways for final print

Oops!  More likely an FP7 due to the location of the forward porthole.  Nice project overall.  What road are you painting it in?

That is Correct FP7, Milwaukee Road...….   I need to decide on the time era...……

More please, Sir

I am currently working on the CAD models of the 2 new hatches, hopefully I will be able to complete those and get them off to shapeways to have printed in a better resolution and material.   I also need to purchase a donor loco to supply the drive, I do have a second chassis incase I mess up on the first...….

Very cool project.  Wish I had the time for that kind of work these days.  I did the research and artwork for the 3rd Rail model and that was a lot of fun but not the same as a classic kitbash.  As you are aware we did the pre-1955 "as-delivered" paint scheme.  The UP Yellow scheme would be nice on a set of these as well as the simplified later orange and black.

What are you using for CAD software?

I use Solid Edge & SolidWorks at work, so it all depends on what I am using at the moment

I have thought about an FP9........   This project has a mind of its own, I just found a set of locos for the drive of this project for a decent price, should have that next week.  When I get my laser cutter I will probably cut the side grills out of laser board, and glue them onto the model as I can paint them to look like stainless steel..........  now to decide 1950's paint or 1970's freight paint........

Are you going to splice the Lionel frame to lengthen it?

Yes I plan to cut and splice the frame, I did pick up a 2nd A unit frame off of eBay incase I mess up the one that I just picked up with the drive components.   When I get the complete drive I will than decide where to cut the two frames, but I am thinking of using the fuel tank to help me join the two frame halves back together

I love projects like this.

Please keep the updates coming Mike.

Thanks, I will do, I did shoot  some primmer last night, may need to do some minor sanding.

Great idea for an OGR magazine article, you should consider it.

Not much of an article, Pictures describe on what's going on more than I can type up some words.

Coming along nicely.

Thanks

I also forgot to mention I will also be painting a B unit to match the A, the only Modification for that is preplacing the dynamic hatch for a non-dynamic hatch and making sure I have a steam generator hatch in the back.  Tonight will be the real planning stage on the chassis

I have not been slacking, did make a little progress, I had to paint the truck side frames black, I had to order a passenger pilot from Lionel and paint that, and cut a frame in half, drill and tap a few new holes and use the fuel tank to join the 2 frame halves together.   I still need to lengthen the wire harness inside the locomotive (what a rats nest those are...….)

I have decals on order, a little bit more sanding on the smaller hatch I made.

however I did take the locomotive outside and took a few progress photos...…..A6
