I think that's what their called I have a spare Atlas 3-rail SW chassis and body that I have gutted and put 2-rail wheels on thought I would build a double set up. Roo.

banjoflyer posted:LCCA did an NW cow and calf lettered for the Texas Special in 2012. The were conventional operation only but had a sound unit. Pretty close to an SW but not exactly the same:

Those are typical "toy train" models, and were NOT prototypically correct. Just look at the incorrect trucks, for example.
I did a pair of All Nation NWs that way. Photo later.
Here we go: I forgot to enhance it, but you get the idea. No, SP never had these colors. The lead unit is bronze; the calf is zamac, with the cab sawed off and replaced with brass sheet. the lettering is black on the other side. just for fun. I have an SD-6 1/2 in a similar paint scheme, made from a pair of Kemtron GPs and some CLW SD trucks.
here is an ex- forum member's project on 44-tonners - same approach as yours - mod the engine body
Go for it!
Looks like a hole that needs to be filled in the O scale market.
Atlas?
5/27 There is a MTH Railking calf on the bay for under $50---listed as a NW-9. Looks like a great starting point to me. The calf "shell" shows up once in awhile, too. These are 3 rail, but conversion should be easier than starting with the cab unit. -Rusty Rails-
Hi everyone.
This has been an interesting thread for me anyway. Thanks to Bob2, Mark, Engineer-Joe all you guys great photos and comments.
So.......... What have I done?
I took the easy way out and bought an MTH Pennsy calf for 47.95 I did not want to cut up the Atlas body I have so I will have to wait till it comes and restart this project again you have all been very helpful I appreciate it. Roo.
Looks good can't wait to have a go myself.
Thanks. Roo.
I did some research through my old Magazines and found a very good article in MR July 1957 about a Cow and Calf, I like to play around with Locomotives as a break from the Steel Mill building.
There is a large gap in the front of the steps where the coupler goes of that chassis I posted because it was a three rail version a piece of styrene should fix that.
I'm only going to run one headlight in the front of the calf as I intend to leave them coupled permanently a couple of wires from the Cow should fix that.
The Black and white Santa Fe unit looks good Roo.
This calf I ordered is breaking all records it's just left Melbourne today. It was posted in America on 1st-June so far 3 days! at this rate I could get it early next week. Roo.
don't forget the Gauges behind the "glass" on the "calf" unit that the engineer in the "cow" unit sees! [its the box on the hood where the cab "should be"]
Except for handrails, pilots, and couplers, those are stunning models.
Great models and the photo of the Green one is outstanding is there a chance of anymore information? I'll send you a postcard from West Australia!
In regards to my order. It's a public holiday here today in Perth so no mail deliveries. Roo
The green units are MTH railking units. Doing a search, Trainworld sells a calf unit if interested:
https://www.trainworld.com/man...-Powered-Burlington/
Note: that the MTH railking are a little wider than scale [like a Lionel postwar NW2.]
I have noticed that the MTH "calf" has some ODD proportions. It looks a bit awkward to me.

Both the MTH cow & calf models are too long.
I ordered a MTH "calf" unit, mine cost $47 + shipping and it is used which doesn't worry me. If I can't use it I will have to cut up a spare Atlas body and scratch the end, one way or the other I will get my herd together. Roo.
