My layout has three continuous loops. One loop has a siding. It is used for "excess" rolling stock storage.
I have often imagined that long and narrow yard only layout where switching cars is kind of a game.
If any of you have a "yard only" layout or a yard is the important part of your layout I'd LOVE to see the pictures.

You need about 4' x 15' to build a tasty yard with all of the nice Ross specialty switches.
