Please don't take offense to this, but it's a rather bold statement.

 

I've done a lot of business with UPS and FedEx and never had an issue, not saying there aren't issues.  Unfortunately, none of us can control Mother Nature and we are at her mercy.  

 

I'm sure they'll get it moving when the weather permits-after all, the safety of the delivery people, the truck drivers and the airplanes are more important than any locomotive.

Oh please...the last shipment I had got the same thing. Ended up being a day late. Big da** deal. Your life won't end without it. And there IS a MAJOR east coast snow storm coming. 

 

I've had terrific luck with UPS, FedEX and, (one fight with an incredibly impossible and flat out @$$hole of a local manager not included) USPS. I've come to know the guys in my local UPS store and they are very good at what they do and are just good guys to work with and have always been happy with their service and prices.

My latest issue with UPS while weather RELATED, the weather wasn't the cause, the %#$@&*% Lazy UPS driver was.

 

 I had purchased 2 Lionel 135 watt power bricks, 2 Power Masters and 2 Cab1 remotes from a fellow forum member, when the pkg. was delivered, the driver couldn't be BOTHERED with knocking or heaven forbid ringing the doorbell, just left the pkg. on the porch and floored it.

 

 My Wife does home daycare, and her car was in the driveway, I find it hard to believe that any reasonably intelligent person (anyone who does NOT need to be reminded to breathe) could not figure out someone was home. After which some little "Angel" swipes the pkg. off our porch. After opening the pkg. and not finding anything that could be quickly sold on the cheap, the little "Angel" throws the open box into some bushes where it sat for several days, during which we had some serious rain, GUESS what that box and contents looked like?

 

 UPS's  Customer NON-Service dept. was less than Enjoyable to deal with, as if it was MY fault. The situation still has not been resolved(the pkg. was delivered Oct.30th). I KNOW that UPS, Fed Ex, DHL Etc. Etc. have unrealistic performance expectations of their delivery people, but the whole HEADACHE could have been avoided with a simple knock or ring of the doorbell. Maybe acceptable to some(who it Hasn't happened to YET) but INEXCUSABLE in my opinion.

If you are shipping FedEx or UPS ground....expect delays...a day or more. Trains are backed up and yards are plugged. Volumes continue to be at an all time high. BNSF is setting company records on a daily, weekly, and monthly rate. These yards can NOT handle the volume they are getting.

And it's gonna get worse before it gets better.

First of all, full disclosure, I retired from UPS after 30 years. Now having said that I am expecting a package shipped Fedx & when I go to the sight to check transit there is a notice that "due to severe weather there may be a delay in shipping". The railyards are backed up because of the snow. Be patient, all of the shipping companies are having problems.

Your package was probably sitting on a truck buried under six feet of snow. There was just a major storm in Western New York. Vehicles were stranded for days. Something like 10-15 people died.

I think todays storm is going to be more to the east.

 

I must be lucky, in the past fifty years, I've only had one item damaged by UPS, and they replaced it.

 

Regarding trains: does UPS move anything by rail?

Before complaining, just stop for a second and THINK.  Yes, think about the infrastructure we take for granted that allows just about anything to ship efficiently as it does -- even on a good day -- without weather challenges.  That infrastructure and the people who work it are what allows you to sit behind your computer, order whatever you want, and have your stuff delivered to your doorstep -- all without you leaving the comforts of home.  

 

That's also a huge part of what makes every small business look good when they ship your goods the same day you order them online or via phone.

 

So give 'em a break if there's an occasional delay.  In the big picture, you're still not inconvenienced all that much.

Well if you have this type of a problem with "package Angels" Might I strongly suggest you divert some train funds and purchase at the very least some game cameras [both day and night vision with NO infared flash] You may not catch them in the act but will know who it is.

He is a realist and a no BS type of guy, who has helped me many many times.

That is why I like his posts.

I've lived 3 places within the last 15 years and it seems to me that it just depends where you live.  My home town: I used UPS almost exclusively.   The town after that, USPS almost exclusively. The current town USPS.  At all three locations it always seemed one carrier had an attitude and it was easier to deal with the other.  Many years ago, when UPS went on strike, I had bought a Lionel Electronic set (wish I still had it).  It was shipped two days before the strike and then the strike hit.  I had to wait, nothing I could do about it.  So, to blame the USPS for the weather and that they won't deliver/ship?  Seems a little childish.

Well, if you don't want stuff dumped on your doorstep, to develop legs or get a

good bath, and you can afford trains, spring for a post office box, and the stuff you

buy will be indoors until it is convenient for YOU to get it.  And the P.O with accept

UPS for you, too, if you sign up for it.  Now, training the shippers to put the P.O.

street address on your package for UPS to the P.O. takes some effort.  I found some

of them to be really dim bulbs.

There seems to be conflicting information. From the UPS web site:

I can't see any reason to bash any delivery service when it's weather related.  You don't want your package to die on the roadside along with the driver do you?

 

The only real problem I have had with any service is Fedex who's driver likes to deliver our stuff to the neighbors.  I think he is dyslexic.

 Please invest some Time and Money in a Reading Comprehension class, there should have been no need to hassle with getting a PO Box, as I stated earlier MY WIFE WAS HOME at the time of the delivery, the items got wet because the pkg was REMOVED from the porch, OPENED and then THROWN INTO SOME BUSHES, after which we had some substantial RAIN move through the area, while the box was unprotected for an unknown number of DAYS in the weather. Please RE-READ as Necessary.

 

 There is no problem "Affording Trains", the "PROBLEM was the UPS DRIVER, not taking the time to simply KNOCK, or RING the DOORBELL, Surely for what all the package carriers charge, that should NOT be an unreasonable expectation.

 

We have used that porch for countless pick ups/drop offs without a previous theft or weather issue, but those were typically privately arranged exchanges, where there was NOT a delivery vehicle stopped in front of the house. If you are not aware, there are people who will watch delivery trucks drop pkgs. and if no one retrieves the pkg. within a few minutes they will go get some free goodies, the delivery trucks may as well be painted fluorescent orange and have a "Free Stuff" sign on the side of them.

You do not want to go through the claim proces. They have a third party company. The first thing they do is reject you so you have to file an appeal. They accepted the appeal but now I have to fill out more paperwork to try to get them to pay the claim. It will probably take a couple of months. In the meantime, I have a customer that does not have his building and I cannot go ahead and build another one until I settle this.

The following is only true for people like me with a rural address:

Getting deliveries to a rural address from United Parcel Service can be problematic, because your regular delivery person who usually gets the job done will take off occasionally, and the relief driver will usually botch the delivery.

 

And FedEx is a 100% no-option Deal Killer for me.  I cannot do business with anybody who uses FedEx for a shipper.  I often wonder who ties their shoes for them each morning.

No problems down here with UPS.

 

My son-in-law is home from Sicily and staying with me for a bit.  He's been ordering stuff off the internet the last few weeks and got a package from Hawaii in 2 DAYS (USPS)!!!  How can that happen?

 

Get this, my neighbor (across the street) mailed me a Christmas card last week or so.  When I got it I noticed it had a Richmond VA stamp on it.  It left her mailbox (50 ft away) went 90+ miles to Richmond, than came back to Portsmouth!!!  Not sure how long or what convoluted direction it took but someone at USPS needs to take a look at what they're doing.  Apparently they've finally closed the Norfolk distribution center just as they said they would a year ago.  But even that makes no sense, there's a large PO facility right here in Portsmouth

Maybe you should find out what the UPS policies are. In this area, none of the carriers knock or ring the bell unless the package requires a signature. I doubt my area is unique, but one never knows.
I used a PO box for years when I was buying a lot on Ebay, and didn't want the packages sitting outside all day.
