I am having a problem with one of the passenger cars in a Lionel Passenger car set.  It is 6-16068

Unlike the other three in the set, every time there is a bump or too sharp a turn the couplers open.

If I tap the release tab (shown in the center of the truck in front of the pickup roller) it pops open.  I have repaired other couplers, but I am not familiar with this one.   Anyone know about these?

Thanks,

John

They can be taken apart but plan on a few hours. I think I counted over 18 parts. They can be fixed but not simply. Not volunteering. Once is enough.

This is the problem area. Metal has to be removed from one or both of these pieces so the tab in the middle can move further into the knuckle.

It is really not too difficult to adjust.  If you can navigate to Lionel's online service pages, download the 1st 1-9 editions. Go to 15-84 GG1 pilot truck. Works the same way. You will see the lock link (#12) notice the tab on the bottom. This is tripped by the armature plate. What you want to do is very slightly, that's all it will need, bend it towards the rear of the truck. Since yours is too sensitive this will give the lock link a little more wiggle room. Don't bend it too much or the armature plate will sag. If you work carefully, you can use a small screwdriver and bend the tab without removing the mechanism from the truck.
