I'm going a slightly different way the two 180-degree turnarounds on my elevated line.

1/2 42" - 42" - 27" - 27" - 42" -1/2 42"

That eases the engines into the 27" curves that otherwise would be too tight.  If you can't do something like that (say, 1/2 42"-42"-27" for 90-degrees), then Rob's idea of the old Marx 34" tracks is best. The only problem is that a lot of the Marx track out on the used market is rusty. Good option, but be prepared to grind some rush off, at least the top that contacts the wheel and pick-ups.

Maybe relevant, maybe not: Lionel used to offer 042 curves with 027 profile rail. I used it in the yards on my layout back in 1990 or so. There was less choice then in track, but I like the Lionel track anyway - it's painted and mostly buried.

I have often wished that Lionel 027-profile track was offered even up to 072 diameter (the 031 is); it's tough track that has a real use, if painted, even on Hi-Rail layouts or in modular situations.

The Marx 034 mentioned above is a good suggestion. I have a bit in my "odds and ends track box" and it is indeed 027 profile.
