Converting a favorite road's conventional loco to tmcc adds many additional features but it does have drawbacks in terms of cost, necessity of technical expertise, time spent on the mod, and possibly finessing those extra boards into limited engine space or adding a tether to mount the tmcc boards and speakers somewhere else.

It seems the easiest, fastest path to remote control is buy the rtr LionChief version of my favorite road name's conventional locomotive, remove it's body shell, and replace it with the body shell of my favorite road name's conventional loco. I already have that favorite road name's conventional loco shell so simply swapping out the two body shells would involve significantly less money, time, and aggravation spent than doing a tmcc mod.

But, I don't know  if the LionChief body  shell has been  modified or "hogged out" to fit the LC electronics?  Anybody know if the two bodies are identical and perfectly interchangeable allowing them to be swapped without modifications to either the conventional 0-6-0 Dockside Switcher body shell or the 0-6-0 LionChief Dockside Switcher engine frame? Has anyone tried a similar, "simpler" approach like this?

Would anyone who's worked on both the Lionel conventional and LionChief versions of the 0-6-0 Dockside Switcher or owns both models please check and compare the shells to see if they’re identical and advise me whether they'll interchange perfectly? Thanks in advance.

This has been discussed a number of times on the Forum. I have done quite a few swaps over the years. The easiest and cheapest way to convert a traditional Geep from conventional to TMCC operation is to buy a TMCC/RailSounds equipped traditional Geep (Lionel made quite a few of them beginning from 1996 well into the 2000s) and simply swap the shells, putting the shell you want to use on the TMCC-equipped chassis.

Minimal technical expertise and time is required, and the cost is relatively low. The replaced shell can be mounted on the discarded chassis and used as a conventional engine, or sold. The only thing that has to be done, for the most part, is to remount the antenna. Also, Lionel changed the shell mounting screw positions over the years, so some modification may required for that, depending on the years, but it's not too difficult. Other than possible mounting screw locations, the shells of these, and the LionChief versions, haven't been altered by Lionel - they all come from the same molds.

These TMCC Geeps are easily found on the Bay, for example, and it's not difficult to find them at prices in the $120-140 range. RS-3 shells will fit on these chassis as well. Make this swap, and you instantly have a Geep with the shell you want but now equipped with TMCC, RailSounds, directional lighting and constant voltage lighting, and in many cases electrocouplers.

I haven't done this swapping with a LC+ engines yet, but I'm getting ready to swap a conventional RS-3 shell and put it on a LC+ RS-3 chassis. I don't anticipate it will present any significant problems.
