While viewing a recent update to Lionel's online shipping schedule, I noticed something that set off a couple of warning signs in my head...
Look at the notation for 6-25271 NYC Heavyweight StationSounds Diner (catalog'd in 2012 Volume 1 earlier this year). It states the item has been cancelled, and is being replaced by a non-StationSounds Diner 6-25790.
And when the Christmas catalog was published during late Summer, the scale Polar Express Diner was listed WITHOUT sound. Very odd.
Now also note that NONE of the recent aluminum passenger car offerings has had a StationSounds diner either... Canadian Pacific, Santa Fe, Milwaukee Road, California Zephyr.
And one final observation... None of the coordinating heavyweight passenger sets to go along with the Blue Comet, Southern Crescent, and Alton Ltd locomotives has had StationSounds cars offered (yet) either.
I realize that over the years, some of these special cars are offered afterwards... And I'm OK with that. But the fact that we're starting to see non-sound diner cars being offered really has me wondering if this is yet another short-cut along the same lines as crew-talk being dumbed down on all but Vision Line products. Perhaps Lionel just doesn't want to put out the effort anymore of recording train-specific announcements/dialogs.
Whatever the rationale, it just seems like another step backwards.
