Good Day,
I'm curious. Are the trailers on the MTH RailKing flat cars close to S Scale in size? The picture is Model number 30-7633

Not sure about RailKing, but I am pretty sure I have some from Lionel that are actually 1:64 scale. I don't have any RK's out right now, all stashed in boxes somewhere or I would check for you.
Containers/Trailers by Lionel, MTH and Atlas are each sized differently;
Atlas is the closest to scale.
The top car is an SHS TOFC car.
The bottom car is an MTH TOFC car.
In S scale the numbers are as follows:
SHS car....53.5 ft. long....10.5 ft. wide
MTH car....56 ft. long.......11.5 ft. wide
SHS trailer.....34.5 ft. long, 8 ft. wide, 8 ft. tall (box trailer only-not undercarriage)
MTH trailer.....44.5 ft. long, 8 ft. wide, 9.5 ft. tall (excluding undercarriage)
So, while some dimensions are similar the overall effect when side by side is pretty stark:
Hope this helps.
Mark
I don't model in S, but intermodal topics interest me, and this thread about trailers caught my eye.
Based on Mark's helpful measurements and numbers the MTH trailer (what Frank asked about) actually seems pretty close to 1/64 scale. I don't know if it's based on an actual prototype, but it is clearly more contemporary in styling (it has a passing resemblance to the 45-foot Pines trailer), so 44.5 feet, would be pretty close to scale for anything from the 70s on. It would be a more accurate look for a spine car than the 50s era SHS trailer. (The paint schemes are another story...).

Good Day Gentlemen,
Thank you for the reviews and information.

Interesting Gentlemen..............
Now I wonder if the MTH trailers could be modified to fit on to the American Models Spine Car?

Frank
I have the isaly's trailer sitting on the isaly's flat car. Just last night we removed the trailer & hitched it up to a 1/64 diecast truck from tractor supply...perfect size.
I found a RK TOFC car and the trailer is just about identical to the Lionel ones I have, which I am almost positive it is 1:64 scale. Fits the Lionel tractor I have with the Lionel TOFC as well.
You can have lower overall height, back then not all trailers where 13' 6'' tall. A lot of 12' to 13' road trailers especially in the northeast and Chicago area. In the 60's, 35'and40'long was common.
