If the big HO layout you are talking about is Miniature Wunderland, it is in Hamburg.  By all means go see it if you can get there.  It is a 2 hour train ride from Berlin and trains run about every hour both ways all day.  Also it is only about a mile from the main Hamburg train station.  We saw it a couple of weeks ago when we were there visiting our daughter.  If you go make sure you go online a get a reservation a few days before.  The place is mobbed.  The reservation is free it just lets you bypass the long line to buy tickets.  You also need to print out the reservation form and take it with you.  You do have only a one hour window  to enter and buy the tickets.  Once in you can stay as long as you like. We spent about 2.5 hours.
