Question for those that have one & are using it. Is it normal for the motor to be much louder & sound like it is straining going one direction vs. the other?

I haven't used mine powered in a couple of months (kept getting ballast in the gears so I'm turning it by hand), but IMO it shouldn't be much noisier/straining in one direction more than the other.
Maybe a new motor would solve the issue, or you could always take the TT apart and inspect the innards, maybe there's some dried-up grease in the camways. Just be careful of the electrical contacts, they will fall out and they're different sizes. Keep track of them and when you put them back in wrap a piece of tape around them to obtain a slightly better than slip fit in the housing so they won't fall out again. Make sure the TT area is flat as well and maybe install a new rubber belt (o-ring).
Yes. The motor has always been loud. I have had a HO scale version for years years years that was loud. The new O scale one is no different. You get what you pay for. I'm still not forking out $1500+ too cheap and I admit it.
