Hey all, About 2 years ago I scored the Atlas tmcc Reading and Northern Sw8 from my local hobby shop. After seeing the actual #801 while riding the Lehigh Gorge Special, I just had to pick this one up. It worked great for most of the time up until now, as during one day of running the speaker started making a loud static sound, that could not be cured by lowering the volume of sound that the speaker produces. So I gave the engine a break for awhile, then put it back on the track for another run. Then the speaker let out 1 final static blow, then went silent. After running the loco after the speaker went silent, no sound would go back on. I am wondering if the speaker can be repaired, or if I can take the loco somewhere to get fixed. If anyone has any information to share, it will be greatly appreciated.

The first thing to do is troubleshoot to see if the problem is really the speaker.

If the speaker is not the problem, you will have to look upstream. Try unplugging and re-plugging the boards into their sockets, and unplugging and re-plugging the connectors - all with the power off, of course.

Have you got another speaker that can be hooked up temporarily with jumper leads? It does not have to be the same size, but should have the same resistance.

I've had several Atlas SW9 speakers fail.  Requires speaker replacement.   Parts are available from Atlas.   Speaker in the tank, requires an extensive dismantle of the unit to replace the speaker.

You have to remove the motor.

And the electronic boards.

There are two screws/mounts for the speaker, with a little luck you can move the electronic boards and motor left and right to allow the speaker to be removed.   Best of luck with your project.  Mike CT.
