Oh one other thing. The third major commodity hauled by the O&W was milk. That was literally stolen by trucks running on state funded highways. Think of what's going on today and if you want a glimpse of the future, think O&W.
The information I have list the O&W locos bought by the B&A as numbers, 452, 454, 455, 459, and 460. They were built in 1929, had 69 inch drivers and weighed 359,000 lbs. I don't know if that makes them a heavy mountain or not. Any way, it doesn't sound like the same engine as the one being discussed. Too bad, it would have been nice to cover 2 railroads with 1 locomotive.
By the way the Bangor and Aroostook has always been referred to as the B&A up here in Maine.
Yes 1929 (I'm getting old!) you are correct and those were the Heavy Mountains. The S&A did have of the NYO&W's 5 light Mountains so there would still be two roads covered.
The Old and Weary car shop (Al Sebach) is still in operation but he was working to restore his web site. I think he is on facebook. thr calling him at (845)680-0405 in the late afternoon or on the weekend and I'll bet you'll get him.(Al runs the shop part time.)
As far as the O&W not running through big cities , most larger cities grew AFTER the railroads ran through them. Take the case of Middletown and the Erie for example, Middletown grew after they convinced (and paid) the Erie to come through it.
I was talking to a guy from Weaver at York and told him it's the only Engine I've got my wife convinced to let me buy!
I WANT THIS ENGINE!
Is there a timetable posted anywhere that lists the Mountaineer route and schedule?
Here's an article from Sports Illustrated, dated December 12, 1966, regarding the O&W. Nice read.
IF you guys really want this locomotive to happen in O Gauge, you'd better step up to the plate NOW and contact Weaver with firm deposits in hand! If it turns out they do not do the locomotive, you've only yourselves to blame. --Paul
I think Weaver would have to officially announce they were making this engine before we could send them a deposit. I'm ready when they are!
What I am saying is it appears this is in the process of being cancelled. If there is any real interest for the O&W's 405, now is the final moment to let Weaver know.
My experience with Joe at Weaver is that he will listen earnestly. For many years I (along with others) just nudged a bit at York about the Lehigh Valley Black Diamond and/or John Wilkes. The arrival of the former this spring was well worth the wait.
I stand by what I have said. I have information to this affect.
The only thing I have is NYO&W In Color from Morning Sun Books. But I'm probably not the only one.
I was in Port Jervis not too long ago and I think I stumbled across the ROW of the O&W. It crosses Route 209 a block or so before Bon Secours Hospital. There is also a street called Owen Avenue. Could that have been built on the O&W alignment hence the street's name and that it's near where the interchange with ERIE?
Well guys, I am as sorry as any of you, but the NYO&W Mountaineer locomotive #405 project from Weaver has indeed been cancelled. It was apparently due to insufficient demand as the Asian builder had recently raised their required minimum price and quantity. Again, my sincere apologies.

I think part of the problem is that most of the guys that are modeling the O&W is they are into H.O. Its a shame as the Mountaineer could have been a masterpiece. Oh well, my train budget is now down to about 50 bucks, my wife will be happy. I'll have to find somthing else to put on the want list.
Since O&W fans are probably found here, may I ask about the former station in High Falls, NY? I was there over the weekend and saw what I think is the old O&W depot, now adjacent to a rail trail, and it seems to be a private home. Is that O&W or perhaps NYC?
The Kingston branch of the NYO&W went through High Falls. You could find more info on the NYO&W Historical Society's website.Ontario & Western Railway Historical Society, Inc.
