A few years ago, my father gave a couple O locomotives, track, some rolling stock, and ZW to me for my family.  I built a small layout, and I took it down when we moved.

We moved into our house here in NC and the previous owner left an 0-27 layout here which my sons now use in the house.  I have also picked up a few more engines and stock, some for their 0-27 and some to support a larger O layout in my shop.

Now my dad wants to clear out the remainder of his mostly postwar and some modern, all conventional, stuff.  Another 4 locomotives and a bunch of rolling stock and accessories, plus another transformer.

Anyway, I am at a crossroads here, as what we have is currently conventional and tubular.  I will need more switches for the main layout in my shop, and I could make a change in track and switches if needed (all 022 Lionel switches at this time - Ross tubular might be a serious consideration).  Current locos and most of the stock are fine on 0-31 track but would be better on at least 0-54.  The bigger issue may be locomotives as what we have to work in is all pre-1990, and nobody really does any new conventional locos (note: I am fine with that, that is what I had as a youngster).

Thoughts?  I want it to be fun for the kids, but I see some limitations ongoing for powered items.

Cool...I might add here that I also use Gargraves S gauge track when I get the urge to throw down some Flyer stuff: much better than the original Gilbert track.

For O I'm using their O54 and O80 sectional for curves. What's also cool is since the rails are insulated from each other I can run either 2 or 3 rail; just a question of attaching the correct rails to the correct power supply. Very handy. 🙂

Have fun and keep us posted.

PS: the fact that it's affordable and (still) made in the US are added bonuses...
