My MTH FP40H CSX speaker produces a very weak sound and it is "tinny". Need new speaker? Maybe something to correct? My local dealer has a two-month back-order (and holding) from MTH. Can I substitute another brand? Specs?
thanks, ChoChowally

If the signal is not distorted, but weak and lacking low frequencies, the problem could be just a bad (electrolytic) coupling capacitor.
If the sound is raspy and distorted, the speaker or the source may be defective.
There are many dealers that stock speakers, so it should be easy to get. Is this a PS-2 5V engine? They had issues with speakers deteriorating. G
Chuck, what info do you need re my CSX FP40H? Cab # is 9993; don't know stock #.

Wally,
There are 2 versions of this engine, Loco sound and Protosound 2. The speakers are different between the two. Do you know which one you have? If it 'talks', you have proto 2 version.

Lionel had a run of bad speakers in engines built around 1999. I have bought TMCC geeps from 1996 to 2000 and a few released in 1999 had very poor sound. When the speakers were switched out, the sounds are tremendous. A new speaker from Boxcar Bill is $ 6. Definitely worth fixing. I've had a few sound boards go out as well.
Chuck; It's definitely PS-2.

I've replace several speakers in my Atlas SW's. A small 30 mm wafer speaker. Part of the problem is when you power the engine the speaker comes on at full volume which appears to be rough on a a very small speaker. I also replaced a speaker in an Atlas SD35. Larger speaker but the same problem, full volume on start up.
