I bought one of these, but it turns out I am the Turkey! It omits ballast between rails, spreads evenly outside of rails, but has nothing to keep the ballast from going on and on and on outside of the rails.

I have one. Worked OK for the coarse ballast (construction sand) we use. For finer ballast, I'd put tape halfway across the slots -- kinda like what you do with cleanser cans for better dispensing control.
I have one too. We use Rossbed or Woodland Scenics Track Bed. Before ballasting, I just put a liberal coat of white glue on the sides. The pace at which you move will also help you regulate how much ballast goes down. A paint brush does a great job of finalizing the shape of your ballast bed.
For my money, I regard it as a certified bargain.

Makes no difference how fast of slow I move the dispenser, not much ballast goes between the rails. I end up using a paper cup to dispense the ballast. I can get it more uniform with a paper cup than I can with this gadget. Mine does not look like the picture in the offering. It is clear plastic, with no "guards" on the sides to shape the ballast. Maybe they sent me a dud!
