I recently purchased 2 MTH steam locos both P2 sounds a Niagara and Boston / Albany. Before I attempt to modify / upgrade what are the most basic service tips that I should be applying? I am concerned about the electrical mainly, I have been running them, both smooth runners, sound decent (for ~20 year old locos) and BOY DO THEY SMOKE!

Both those locomotives are PS2 5V most likely. I would recommend you stop running them till:

1. You replace the battery with a new one.

2. Replace the speaker with a new 16 ohm speaker.

The battery in both locomotives is more than likely the original white battery, which has been know to kill the board. The speakers used at the time had a tendency to have the finish come off and short the speaker, killing the audio amp on the board. Replacing the speaker prevents that.
