My Sister's son won an MTH PS2 loco at a show. It's about 10 years old and the batt. was dead.
What would the cost at most shops be for a new batt. and to reprogram the loco so it can be used with the new small commander?

A new battery purchase price should be around $10-$12. It's fairly easy to do. If they do it there may be an additional charge.
Not sure what you mean by re-program. A reset? They would probably do that for nothing if they thought it meant return business.

Battery may only be dead but not bad. Try leaving loco stopped & dead on powered track for a few hours. It may charge up. No reprogamming needed.

Turn the smoke unit off (if it has one) if you are going to leave it on a powered track to charge the battery.

If the new engine has never been run with DCS, it should run without resetting.
Once it has been run or programmed to run with DCS, the engine ID is 1 or greater. Then you will have to give it a factory reset with DCS to get the engine ID back to 0 in order it to run with the DCS remote commander.

You don't necessarily need DCS for a factory reset. A Z-4000 will do it with a series of bell whistle pushes.

I'm afraid that's not the case. The bell and whistle reset is the same as a DCS Feature reset and that won't reset the engine ID number.

Joe is correct, its a different kind of reset thats required to accomplish what he wants to do.
Maybe one of the DCS Techs might jump in here and explain.
