The engine ran just fine without battery and the fact that they don't run when the power is off is minor to my grandson.

His TGV Lego train is a 610 part item he built himself and it runs well with his Lego loop inside his Fastrak loop, I wanted him to get back on track with O gauge as opposed to a model that isn't going anywhere although it is cool and a very good testament to his building skill.IMG_5832IMG_5796

You are correct sir.

Here's why I asked originally: I bought this damaged engine from a forum member to salvage its one remaining eccentric crank for one on my damaged ATSF Atlantic. The guy I bought it from converted it to command control and he had told me the Railsounds would not work at all without a battery. I took him at his word thinking the command control conversion might cause that. I have several engines with Railsounds and they all operate this way.

Well it's working ok and no battery in it we are running it off of the cheap Lionel transformer that comes with the Polar express. I'd call that conventional!

Thanks for the great deal and great engine / grandson loves it and the simplified valve gear is just fine for him!

Grandson started digging into the manual and was looking at the command control stuff (age 7) and wanted to know where that remote was!
