What is the best method to make a coal load for a tender?  The coal load will be 2 inches wide by 5 inches long and will be about 1/8 of an inch deep at the edges.  It is going on top of a 3rd rail sunset models big boy tender.  The antenna wire appears to be on top of the tender and will be covered by the coal load. Should I use wax paper to keep the coal load separate or is it ok to glue the load directly on top of the tender?  I have coal from scenic express and i was thinking about using mod podge Matt as the glue.

my questions are ,

should i glue the coal directly onto the tender or use wax paper or a spray to separate  the coal from the tender?  The wax paper seems to be a bit awkward so a spray ( Pam ) or possibly wet water may be better.

what is the best glue for this application?

Should the glue be full strength or diluted?

Thank you

I don't know what adhesive to recommend, but I wouldn't glue directly to the tender. I would look for a very thin plastic to wrap around the tender to isolate the load from the tender. That way if you ever change your mind or decide to sell, you would have an engine in original condition by simply lifting off the coal load.

You could use an old tender to test your procedure.

I have had good success with coal packets from Dollar Tree for many gondolas and hoppers. I always lay down a thin piece of cut-to-size black paper (e.g. roofing) fixed with small amount of tacky glue, then add generous amount of white glue mixed with water. After sprinkling a layer of coal I spray it with a mixture alcohol and water. Let it dry overnight. Rick

I’ve detailed this process in step by step format, with what products I use, and a complete “ how to “ ....I’m not good at doing the whole link thing, but use the search engine and look for improving coal loads, and I’m sure it’ll pop up,....this is an improved coal load using Brennan’s real anthracite #4 &#5 mixed together to get the actual look of the NYC’s specific coal reserved for passenger duty,....
