I've been using a shaving brush and dish detergent in the kitchen sink for about 30 years. I rinse the trains like a dish, and set them on a towel for a couple of minutes. I don't submerse operating cars or engines. Then they go down on the linoleum floor arraigned in a "V" pattern where a muffin fan blows on them for a few hours. I rotate them occasionally and also put them on their side to get the moisture out. But i live in a relatively dry climate in central texas.
The handling of the teains while cleaning is the trick. And postwar decals can also be a problem.
