Please, I would like to know where are the following dates placed on a freight car: 'Built,' 'New' and 'Rpkd?'

Comparing model train cars of the same road name, of some different manufactures, have the dates placed on different locations on the car.

What is the prototypical procedure?

Thank you,

Ralph

BLT is the month/year when the car was built. RBLT is the month/year the car had extensive rebuilding.

RPKD is the date when the truck journals had the packing (helps retain car oil in the journal box) replaced on a non-roller bearing truck.

Not sure about NEW, might essentially be the same as BLT.

Location depends on car manufacturer or railroad.

Ralph,

Don't expect the model manufacturers to get the dates right.  Below is a photo of the data area on a Lionel boxcar.  The RPKD date (1-8-49) is before the build date (6-56).  Plus the car has the circle keystone which was no longer used after 1952.  For the rivet counters, this car has too dark paint and is the wrong type car for an X31A, both of which are alright for me.

Thank you Rusty and Ron.

I thought, I kind of understood what, was what, but as you pointed out Ron, I have a car with similar markings, as yours, with a repack date earlier then when the car was built and this threw me off.

And of course, try to find a prototype photo. of the car for comparison!!!!!!

What shop did P.RR. have with the code 'FTW?'

Fort Worth, Texas, or Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, N.Y.C., N.Y.S.?????

I'm kidding about Fort Wadsworth, S.I., I used to live on S.I., so I know.
