Hi, new to the forum, and to the hobby! I have a number of prewar tinplate passenger and freight cars and am enjoying learning how to repair all the various types. I have some replacement parts from Brasseur and others, and have been happily going through the various cars fixing them using the guides in Olsen's. One that has me stumped is how to replace the latch on a box coupler. I found a thread that suggests using a hammer and chisel, which makes sense, but I can't dissassemble the coupler to get the hood off without destroying the hood. The plate appears to have been heated to seal the plastic over the plate. Is there a tool or jig I should know about that makes just attaching a new latch simple? Thanks in advance, great info on this site!

The hook is meant to be staked before the box is attached, however it can be attached in one of three ways:  soldered, glued or staked.  In the latter, I use a small brass insert that fits inside the box and straddles the hook to support it when the box is placed on a firm surface, then stake the hook from the bottom. The only issue is the box will sometimes break, so if you use this method, keep a spare cast box handy.
