So, my 3 week old Lionel SD60e (Legacy) seems to be running slower than normal.  I'm not quite sure why this is.  The engine only runs at about half the top speed of my postwar switcher (I'm running an 8 car consist on both engines).

I've checked the track for voltage issues and all is good.  I've looked for debris, same, all is good.  Additionally, I've cleared the speed limit function on the CAB2 remote so that's not it either.  And yes, the engine was lubed (about 3 weeks ago).  Is it normal for the more modern engines to have a much lower top speed than their postwar counterparts?

Any input here is greatly appreciated.

  1. if you noticed that it is running slower than before, then you should look into it. The basic stuff like are the traction tires in place? Turn down the volume and listen for any noises. Are all the wheels turning? Anything stuck in the gears or binding? etc.
  2. if you want to go inside look for wires caught or anything else that could be causing slower running. try spinning the flywheel to see if it spins fully and easily.
  3. I have seen wires disconnected and a truck not pulling
  4. I would not compare it to engines without command for speed
