Brass Steam Loco Appliances/Parts

Caboose hobbies still has a lot of these parts and can order from PSC.

Check out Stevenson Preservation Lines web site.  They have a lot of dome castings.  Precision Scale has a few domes but I don't recall ones like you are looking for.

I know Bob has a Harriman dome master - I made it.

 

Generally speaking, if you need a dome in O Scale, you have to make it.  A solid block of brass, a lathe, and a sanding drum will get you started.  You need a Dremel with cutoff disc, a respirator, and a piece of tube to bolt the dome to, to get the flange contour to follow the boiler contour.  Good Luck!

I talked to Stevenson yesterday.  He has had a recent hard attack, so I was reluctant to talk long, but some of his domes, side veiws only shown, are oval.  The loco I am wanting to approximate... would have to scratch build the whole thing to be exact...used round steam and sand domes that were identical to each other...some of the boiler top appliances on this Lionel loco are plastic!, so, if forced to, I will shape out of styrene.

Could you be more specific as to just what this loco might be?

Those are sources for domes?  I subscribe to OST, and have not seen the featured domes.

 

Styrene should be absolutely trivial to get exactly the dome you need.  You can carve it with a knife, or really cut it with a rasp.  I doubt you will even need a Dremel.

I just suggested places to look. OST has lots of ads, and maybe the Proto 48 folks have some sources. I was just trying to be helpful.

As Martin above points out, it would be helpful to know what locomotive you are trying to build.  I looked again at the Stevenson offering of steam and sand domes and see several round domes with round tops that would fit various locomotives.  As Bob T points out, round domes can be easily shaped on a lathe and per old Mel Thornburg articles, they can be turned in a hand drill with some patience.

Since you are not locked into brass parts, would a set of diecast sand and steam domes that came with the All Nation BO Ten Wheeler kits work for you?

Thanks, but I have no idea what those look like?  This loco has steam and sand domes

that appear to be identical to each other in size and shape.  Stevenson may have them,

but can't tell from the internet pictures, and could not get a clear description in talking

to him.

Go on ebay and look under O Scale "Other" category and type in "All Nation" in the search box and you will see a photo of an AN Ten Wheeler for sale about halfway down the listings.

My Harriman dome is the same general shape, but slightly larger.  I think the master went from Dennis to Stevenson.

rrjif:  I took a look at that AN 4-6-0...the steam and sand domes look identical to each

other...if that is what you have and yours are, I'd be interested.

I do have a set of the All Nation diecast domes.  The sand dome is somewhat smaller in diameter than the steam dome.  Contact me directly at my email address if you want them.
