Not sure if this is the correct place to post this as I’m really new here.  I will be in Matthews, NC near Concord and Charlotte most of April.  There aren’t any hobby shops/clubs anywhere near Fairbanks, LA where I live most of the time.  Will anyone recommend a place to go and see a layout, talk about the hobby, etc.. around the Charlotte, NC area? From what I gather, there’s a Lionel outlet store in Concord though it seems small in the photos I’ve seen online.  Thanks for any recommendations!

Hey @Ricky Bridges! I'm not sure who else is in Charlotte, but I'm happy to point you at some things around the area. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of great places left IN the city, but there are a few within a short drive.

  • There is a Lionel Retail store in the Concord Mills mall. It's not huge, but there's a TON of stuff there, and if it's something that's from a couple catalogs back you'll find discounts of 40% or more. They have a couple operating layouts, and some great folks who work there.
  • Berkshire Station is about an hour northwest of the city in Iron Station, NC.
  • The Train Loft is about an hour and fifteen minutes north of the city in Winston-Salem, NC.
  • It's not a train store, but the NC Transportation Museum is an hour NE of the city, and it's one of my favorites. Huge old Southern Railroad roundhouse, lots of stuff on static display, operating train rides on the grounds. Plus, having all the old Southern employees in the area means it gets to do fun things like handle the rebuild of the N&W #611, which is just the coolest thing ever.

Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy your visit!
