So folks either love them or they hate them!  I love them.  Here are two MTH BL-2s I bought from Mike Caruso.  The number 83 is ProtoSound and is a really smooth running engine.  I happen to have a PS3 upgrade kit that will go in it.  The 7181 with the newer paint scheme is a non powered unit.  Thanks to Mike!!!

Nice, Mark!  I also saw them previously and thought they'd be great to upgrade.  I've come to believe that early MTH quality makes for excellent upgrade candidates.  Do update us when the install is completed.

BTW, I never met a first generation diesel I didn't like.  Gotta get me a BL-2 some day.

Here is my follow-up, pics of my PC P2 Box Cab along with my NYC Box Cab also. I had only seen the PC Box Cab one time and knew it would be a hard find, so when it came up for sale on E-Bay I was ecstatic, even better was the seller lived right around where I worked so no shipping costs involved. Now I'm on the hunt for the Cigar Band P2, and the straight NYC black P2, then it's back to collecting NYC Steam.

Mark,

I love the BL-2s.  I always migrated to unusual engines. Enjoy them. Too bad the Pennsy didn't have any.

Pat so agree.  Wish one of the roads I am partial to had them.  In fact I would do something so very unlike me and buy a BL-2 in a good fantasy  paint job of anyone of my favored  roads albeit not prototypical.

THANK YOU MARK!!!!!!!

I thought I had seen one but could not find it by looking at most recent catalogs or a search.

Will stop by my local dealer today to order.  They are available now at MTH.

Got my package from Scenic Express. Placed the order over the weekend. I ordered some more of their scrub grass which I really like and as I was browsing I came across a new scenery item from Martin Welberg so I ordered a bunch of them in various color tones. Unfortunately the majority of them are back ordered and won't ship till maybe August. But now that I got the first package I like the look of them. Pics.............Paul

Mark thanks again!

Local dealer ordered this morning.  Will be here in a week or two at most.

Ron,

I just saw this after responding to the last message!  That's great!  I'm glad you got one ordered.  The demo paint scheme really accentuates the lines of the BL-2!  I like it, but had to go with my favorite Western Maryland.

Thanks Mark- I placed a bid on it almost not expecting to get it since it was in such good condition. I was a little surprised that it landed in my lap. It looks showroom new as you can see in the photos. I don't think it has much run time on it judging by the condition of the wheels and pick up rollers.

Bob,

You just never know when a conservative bid will get the item for you!  Congratulations!

Got this a few weeks back:

It's a Heathkit #RP 1065.

Now I don't wish to sound like a braggart, but I think over the years I've gotten fairly decent at getting my locos fine-tuned and running well. Have been using Troller Autopulse units and an MRC "ControlMaster VI", and everything has been pretty good...or so I thought.

This thing is remarkable in its ability to make everything run amazingly well. From 3-pole Rivarossi locos (both HO and 0) to anything with an open-frame DC-71 to engines with Pittman can motors (also HO and 0). Low speed is terrific, the "momentum" feature is actually something that can be used in practice, unlike other packs that offer this option. Has multiple controls for pulse, but I'm finding it's just not needed. And because it started as a kit, it's very "user friendly" as far as being able to go inside and make circuit adjustments as needed/wanted.

Am still learning all it can do; it's big, heavy, think of it as kind of a DC equivalent to a ZW...

Happy Fourth, everyone.

Got in another station kit...which l don't need, and it does not have a family resemblance to others, although l have seen wildly different stations on roads. I kitbashed a number of Plasticville stations into very different but "related" structures. Now do not plan to use. Should have picked some other available O scale kit for similarity bashes. Now this road will look like it was assembled from a multitude of shortlines...very prototypical!

A couple new additions to the fleet.

Lionel Canadian National 2-6-0 #86.  This was once part of Richard Kughn's Carail collection.

Also this custom Three Stooges boxcar.  Partially because I'm a major fan, and partially because the Redford Theatre where I build an annual Christmas display has a twice yearly Three Stooges Festival, so it'll be fun to run on this years display.

You've got to run them!! Play a little "City of New Orleans" by Steve Goodman in the background and make a nice little video to share with us!!

That is one of the nicest looking passenger sets in my opinion. Enjoy!!

Just got this off ePay. No idea when it was made, but someone reprinted an entire one of these, almost 1600 pages!

The originals this old are usually way too fragile to read. I wanted a reading copy.

It's the June 1941 edition, which gives a great snapshot of immediate pre-war rail traffic.

Yesterday and today picked up two "very special" box cars to add to roster which I needed like another hole in my head.  A couple months back also picked up a special cab.  Now the cab was to complete a semblance  representation of the caboose trains that run here at the NCTM.

But what is so special they all belonged to JERRY!  Jerry was a fellow O-Gauger and original "baby boomer" like myself but a little older.  A happy guy always telling jokes.  He and his wife owned a farm with many Quarter Horses and almost as many old John Deer tractors.

My best memory is a train show we did together.  The deal was buy three tables and get a forth free.  So we had a U-shaped end cap two tables each.  I always take dynamic test stand to run engines.  Had a MTH RK 611 on it. I was running it and "playing the whistle" as he returned from the restroom.   When he got to our tables he opened his wallet and bought the engine explaining hearing the whistle he had to have it.

The cab,

Thanks guys,  I'm trying to force myself to pick up some nice trains in addition to all the junkers I buy to restore.  I kept looking at this one over and over and eventually pulled the trigger.  I'll be curious to see what the set box number is since it is covered up under stick on tag.  I don't expect the 265E ever came with those particular 027 cars, but who knows in the world of uncataloged sets...

Someone a few years ago offered off-color re-pop parts for these sets. (Possibly more durable plastic. I recall the originals being slighlty brittle.

I was researching the prewar versions and ran across a toy info site with them. I don't recall the name but a search might help.

Stock, custom, and made to order panels too.

I think it had an 60s version and a later revival.  Might have been different brands though.

There were BIG ones too; "sky scrapers".

Nice find!  I, too, had a Kenner's Girder and Panels set in the early 1960s.  My set came with a battery-powered elevator and lots of straight and curved road sections. I used the curved road sections to build parking garages for my Matchbox cars.  There was and still is something about the geometry of parking garage ramps that fascinates me. I didn't realize the structures were approx. HO scale, but that makes sense.

This set and American Plastic Bricks were my favorite (architectural) toys.

Enjoy creating with your sets!

Matt,

My wife for fathers day actually picked this Lionel light up for me just recently, for my new Train Room/Bar in our new home.  We take possession on the 12 of July.  This Lionel light has cool rail sounds each time you turn the light on.  I have no idea how old the Lionel light is or what old store it came out of.  This is the 1st time I have ever seen this particular Lionel Light, it may have been made for a store promotional, I do not really know however.  Anyway she looks cool with an LED Light in her.

I recall that Lowes had them for sale just before Christmas 2007.  I had thought about buying one.  But, when I went back they were all gone.  So felt very lucky and fortunate that was given this that Christmas.

Here are my latest acquisitions.

A McCoy 4-4-4 engine (1957? not sure of the year engine #3512 any help would be great for identifying the year) engine weights 8.5 lb's!. 1969 Gondola, Twin peak flat with load, 1967 Hopper and a 1966 caboose.
There is just something about McCoy that are great, they are large and I can see them!

Purchase off the forum (best people to deal with!), Items look never run.

My ONLY disappointment was with that Cheap,"CRAPPY" near-worthless "Quick Start Manual" that MTH (Mike Wolf) includes saving money on a $500.00 engine.  To add insult there is, at least of two days ago when I contacted them, no downloadable full manual available from their web!

Yes, what Matt wrote is probably MTH's solution; a generic manual.  I still like model specific manuals, but at work I have had to get used to this sort of thing too.

Matt, they are NOT all the "same."  Where are the function switches and pots for the BL2?  Is there a preferred exhaust port to load smoke fluid?

Since of my 130 O-Gauge power units 92 are MTH (only a dozen are RK) I do know my way around MTH stuff.  So found the function switches/pots.  But still do NOT know if there is a preferred stack to load the fluid.   The BIG point is a $500.00 engine and a CHEAP generic "quick start manual."

If one was a newbie to MTH engines?

Best way to solve this problem is to send the generic manual with a link for a more detailed engine.
Once your on the manual site there be online manuals by engine part numbers.

Not there!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Bob,  I think they were a mix and match.  The set box had 7003 stamped on the side of it which I've seen as an uncataloged set with those cars and various engine's sometimes a later 258 and others a 1688 but never the larger O gauge 265E.  This one seems to be a 1940 version based on the trucks and coupler on the tender and so it could have come in the 1940 135E set with a 2654, 2652, and 2657.  I've posed it with those cars here.  It did end up being very clean although the shipper allowed some loose track clips in the package and one of them got wedged between the steam chest and the box causing some "new" scratches.  Minor, but this engine was so clean it is noticeable to me.  I'll live though!  I probably paid a little more than I wanted, but on the other hand a paid less than half what a new MTH version would cost and I'll take a nice original every day of the week.

Is this a search for a solution or an opportunity to be difficult and complain about things you have no control over?

The solution is for MTH to do the correct thing.  To start with they need a Quality ASSURANCE Manager, NOT a Quality Control Manager.

After my contact with them earlier this week they shall have up dated their website to include the full manual which is in fact reference  in the cheap quickie manual.

As stated when I contacted Lionel about their site not have a downloadable manual they responded and corrected within 24-hours.

Bought this

Chain Link and Screen

On the left is fine mesh tulle for the screening on a cooling tower model I'm building and on the right is bigger mesh to make over 10' feet of chain link fence for the refinery in which the cooling tower is going. It was the single least expensive model RR purchase I've ever made: $0.70. Yes! That's right! 70 cents at Jo-Ann Fabrics.

That was an excellent pickup for you Doug!

I collect things with the character of Sarge from the Cars movies. They just came out with this, I've only ever seen them on eBay for quite a bit of money. I have no idea why, but after I got my oil changed yesterday I went to the nearby Toys R Us. I felt some strange disturbance in the force or something. Anyway, they only had one of these there.
Got it for retail instead of the huge markup for all the places I've seen it online.

They said they'd just put it out less than an hour ago and assumed it'd be gone that day. Total luck.

Hi Lee, its always nice to find something you have been looking for! Plus sometimes its better to be LUCKY than good!

IMG_5071IMG_5072Unexpectedly picked up this near new 1950 #1467W set today. Cars have never been out of the boxes (until now!). Engine has seen hardly any run time. Perfect. Got all the boxes for everything, transformer, even the original 1950 catalog.

The cars are still had their factory inspection/quality control inspection tags on them!

Yep.

If I'd been an hour or two later, I'm sure I'd have missed out, as it'd been out for less than 10 minutes when I came in and saw it there.

The problem is, I have one shelf on my bookshelf in the layout room devoted to my Sarge collection, and there's no room for this with the rest of the stuff there. I could put it there, but a lot of Sarges would have to go into boxes.

These showed up today.  It is a 1935 version with thick nickel rim drivers and all the other 1935 specific details. In the past I had picked up two complete sets to restore (both had already been repainted once) and more recently I landed a rough but original set of the 1936 Red Comet cars with the red belly pans.  I was really surprised by how clean this most recent set is  I'll deal with the wheels and make every attempt to use thick nickel rim wheels.  It's kind of funny that lately, I've made a real effort to choose nicer original stuff versus stuff to restore.  I have been surprised by how seemingly easy it is too, it's more of change in outlook and direction than anything I guess.  Anyway sorry for the babble, here are a few pics of the set.

This 1939 version of the Gunmetal 265E also showed up today.  The motor runs so silky smooth it's incredible.  The engine is not perfect, I think it actually took a header on the nose as it is/was slightly pushed in.  I still need to work on that part a bit.  The diecast wheels are perfect on this one as is the cab.  It's not quite as nice as the 1940 version 265E I also recently picked up but it will stay I think.  You can see them both in the second pic, the nicer one is to the rear.  You can kind of see what I mean about the newest one having a tweeked nose.  We can get her fixed up though!

Great find! I had the set on the left as a kid. Turns out I still have it!! My Mom has it in a basement storage room...but not for long!!

I plan on spray painting the blue beams a rust color so I can stage a new sky scraper building scene.

I too had the set on the left as a kid!! Wow! What a great find! Brings back memories!

Hey Matt, I know you are a great packer, and I am seriously not making issues with this, I am saying, this is how I pack these engines for long journeys. I sent my VL Big Boy to a friend for some tweaking, it came back with the number boards bent a little. We just tweaked them right back to correct position. Thanks for responding, it's just the way I ship....I did receive my Southern SD45 High hood Diesel...IMG_8729

I trust you know their history, with their popularity of decades ago coming to a quick end when it was discovered how easily they were tipped over, causing quick fires, given their highly flammable liquid contents (kerosene ?) .

Dennis, you have confirmed my suspicions! I have 2 of these built up that I acquired somewhere/somehow! You may have increase support on your road bed as they are supper heavy!!

Yes, as they say, it is a Doorstop!  I have another one that needs restored.

Steamboy,

Hmmm...I'm not sure about that. I have never seen a 2RL to know.  On a hopper, as long as it couples and the wheel flanges stay on the track, I wouldn't think it matters.  The coupler sure looks like a 3-rail one and not a Kadee size, though I am told you can couple Kadees to 3-rail oversized couplers.  Please share with us when you receive the hopper.

Myles,

You are so right about the delicate details.  I do not have any of their engines, but I can imagine working on one care must be given.

Hi everyone, well it was a great day as I went to the Lionel convention sale today in Tacoma Wa. Cabinet Bob was there, Yes Paul 2 and Playtrains your dad was out visiting! He took me under his arm and showed me how to get some great buys!

Impossible?  No idea what you're talking about.

BTW,  you are aware of the plastic gears used in the first of these MPC GG1's?  Hopefully yours isn't one of those.

Yep im aware. Mine has metal gears. As far as I know, only the tuscan red GG1 from 1977 used the plastic gears.

I dabble in HO as well and am able to acquire some of the locomotives that I've had or would like to have in O.  I caught this older handsome Broadway Ltd GG1 that has good sound and is a smooth runner. It appears to be die cast as well. Bought used for a buck and a half. Beautiful piece. I have the Lionel JLC model that is similar.IMG_7362IMG_7366

I'll look for ya at York

Larry

Wow Larry that's a great looking engine! But at that size wont you need a bigger outside layout? LOL

Thanks Jon, it's crazy sophisticated and the learning curve is steep but my MRC system just wasn't cutting it and the Digitrax is too engineery to use. This one I can program ESU decoders in a slick graphical interface. I install a ton of LokSound decoders so having their system seems appropriate

Larry, I worked on one of those at MTH school, I think they made me quit fixing it cuz they didn't think it was worth the effort. According to the MTH factory techs G scale is the bane of their existence. I love G gauge trains, they're sooo cool

Purchased some McCoy cars from a Forum Member and they were delivered last week.
These McCoys are great/perfect condition, as I call it a “WOW Factor”.
(Circus wagon wheels have  Zinc rot which is a common problem, replacements are being sought after).

Best thing about McCoy’s are that they are so large, you do not need glasses.

Great find!

Schweeet!

I know that sucker didn't come cheap! Is this among the new batch they sold off? For years, the only civilian-owned military Humvees were ex-USMC out of one auction at Albany, GA. I heard rumors another batch was going to be sold off.

I would say it's too bad we don't live near each other so we could take out military vehicles out for a spin, but you'd leave my 1944 Willys MB Jeep in the dust right away, as your can go highway speeds and mine would cause damage if it went over 45 MPH...

I still have a part of a tire from one of my Humvees, it came apart driving down a road on a FTX, on hardball road. Practically exploded and I'll never know why (thank goodness it was a runflat as we of course had no spare). I used it as a paperweight for years in the service and couldn't bring myself to throw it away for some reason...

They been auctioning them for about a couple of years now. I finely bit the bullet. Issue has been the SF 97s with the statement  of off road use only.  Finally  worked issue with licensing in Florida.  Less than ten but still not cheap.

Finally got clearance to pick it up. By next week today it will be in my driveway. Can't wait!!!

Lee, there is currently on E Bay a Studebaker in original condition for sale. Seller is in your area. It needs restoration but obviously one that is hard to find.. that is one butt ugly truck.

Have never really liked the Humvee. My choice would be the old 3/4 ton truck the Army had in the 50's. Our Weapons platoon had them in Germany and liked them better than the jeep. Still like the ORIGINAL  jeep.  Had the opportunity to drive a restored Bantam jeep a friend owned. The original concept was the best. After I got out of the Army I swore I would never ride in a deuce and a half again-but I did.

Doug, Please let us all know how it runs! I have wanted one from my Marine Corps days! Back then all they had were Jeeps! LOL

I just got this in the mail today, scored it off of eBay. This is the employee magazine for the big rayon Mills in Elizabethton. As far as I know, it's the only time they used the railroad as a cover photograph. The station is where all the employees got on and off. It was called Bemberg up until World War II, and they thought the name was to German, so they renamed it Port Rayon for the duration of the war.

My late Uncle Ernie's name is in it. I had no clue he'd been in Seattle in WW2, wish I knew more about that.

He's quite a character, my father's oldest brother. He passed away from a heart attack in the 90s. He was quite possibly one of the smartest people I have ever known, and was one of the chief geologists for the State of Florida for several years.

I am hopeful it will not need much besides what I already know.. My mechanic is going to pick it up for me. When he gets back we will spend the next day going over it and hanging parts.
