I can see it now...Sharknado 4: Sharks on a Train.  Sharktraino?

Haven't bought much lately but today I went to my favorite antique store while I was out doing rail photos. Glad I stopped. They had just got in a very nice Lionel 736 Berkshire with the 2761WX tender it really great shape. The 76 had been at the top of my list so I brought it home. Not a bargain price but fair. Runs smooth and quiet.  It is clean but I haven't lubed it yet but will.

There's nothing in that alleyway right now but I like you're idea so thanks for adding your two cents.

Your convivial reply is certainly much appreciated and fits the overall social atmosphere of OGR, doesn't it. FrankM.

Oh, I be a-lurkin' all right; in fact, I actually took a couple photos of an alleyway along Rt.11 in Upstate NY recently (though they came out poorly.) Yes. Indeed. I am out there watching and examining.

The new Trains special edition on N&W 611 was at the Barnes & Noble store so I bought a copy today.

It was pretty good. I saw the locomotive as a kid in the park at Roanoke before the flood, and then running several times after that. I probably live way more than 1000 miles from the nearest NS tracks and might never see her again, but I'm so glad she's back in steam.

I enjoy reading train books.

This one is "Hollywood Trains" by J. C. Squares & J. Spencer Beck

First Copyright date is 1941© - last Copyright 1994©

This is a reference book about Hollywood, how they use their top stars in pictures about trains. The book is printed in high contrast, black & white,

You railroad puffs, may enjoy this book.

I have been getting a few big ticket items (big ticket for me) before I retire.  Good thing, I accepted a 'voluntary' Early retirement package last week, just in case they decided to put me out to pasture with no hay.  I don't need this now, but thought I would get it when the price was so attractive. This ZW works, and since I worked in electronics for 39 years, I should be able to keep it going.  This is the seller's photo, so don't ask me about the pear shaped candles at the top of the photo, that or strange light bulbs.  lol  I'll have some fun seeing what it will do, I've never used one before.  (I mean a ZW, not pear shaped candles even though I've never seen those before either)

Hey Mark-

Great looking transformer.  Hope it works out for you ok.  One word to the wise:

Don't forget to install and use a "TVS Diode" across each of the four ZW outputs.

I also have a few around the layout, installed across the clips of a standard Lockon..

Bought them from Mouser.  Inexpensive.  Also got some 10-amp resettable circuit breakers from Mouser.  All this stuff is to protect your locomotives containing circuit board memory modules.

If you DO NOT do this, the memory boards will stare at you and say:  "Who are you!"

Cheers..  your buddy.

Ken,

Thank you for the tip.  I recall you mentioning the TVS diode before.  Yes, it doesn't take much to make memory boards dumb.

Buy anything cool lately? - I think so.

Picked up these two MTH PRR Geeps.  The lead unit is GP9 #7001 which started out as an old MTH Premier loco equipped with only horn & bell.  I ditched the innards and turned it into a dummy unit.  I kept just enough electrical for a headlight on the long end and interior cab lights. I installed cab figures facing in the proper (long hood forward) direction and the snow/rock plow.

The trailing unit is GP7 (with dynamic brake) #8571. The PRR's initial order of GP7's did not include dynamic brakes but they quickly changed their mind and began ordering WITH dynamic brakes before changing over to ordering the GP9 model.  This is an old MTH Premier loco as well but equipped with PS1.  I removed two cab figures, disabled all but the marker lights, re-wired the motors in serial (just like a Williams) and replaced some traction tires. Although it's conventional it runs really well even at lower speeds. The PS1 sounds aren't bad and are certainly way better than no sounds at all.

I elected to run the dummy unit first since I wanted to run long hood forward. The powered unit starts up and runs in the default, factory direction (short hood forward) which is fine by me if it's the trailing unit. I plan to run these two as a unit for their foreseeable future.

I paid $110 for the horn & bell and $130 for the PS1.  Total investment $240.  I think they look good and I know they run good.  They’ll never climb a grade on their own but I have lots of flat, level track for them to cruise.  Win!

As far as buying something:  I just received a small box in today's mail containing about 300 tickets of various destinations for the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee interurban system.  These are NEW--never used by the time the system quit running in January-1963.  I'm probably crazy for getting them off of Ebay--but they are fascinating to look at, especially when you're a traction buff like me !

Today, I continued building my custom heavy duty "bookcase" in my dining room, made out of 2 x 10 lumber and 8x8x16-inch cement blocks.  I place parallel lengths of Midwest cork roadbed and then from 56-inches to 72-inches worth of tubular track.

Each track is equipped with a Lockon, in case I want to apply power to light up cars.

I have too many locomotives and passenger cars and need a place to display them and get them out of the way.  I save the empty boxes and place them in storage!

I assembled my Rail-King Santa Fe A-B-B-A Alco units and put on display.  VERY, very

impressive looking.  FOUR motors, too !!  Pictures will be forthcoming soon.

Cheers.

KRK

I got in the Menard's Feed and Seed this morning.  Looks like I will have to change

the signs, since they did not exist in 1940 or in my modeled area today, and the truck

will have to go, also.  Will have to look at it to see if truck light wiring will transfer to

something pre-1941.  It looks nicely weathered and that will have to be matched when

a larger elevator tower is built for it.

A feather in your cap, "Now your talking"!

It should pull 14 all day.

Like it wasn't there.

It doesn't get much better than A-B-B-A's with extra motors.

Going for a "swap in" for 5?

My Gramps used 6 (experimented with 8, and I think the track got kinda hot) . I think he had 28 aluminum cars to match.

Hey Adriatic--  Regarding my Santa Fe A-B-B-A units containing FOUR motors.....

My friend "Ray" at "House of Trains" in Hoodsport, WA has a long Super Chief on some long custom shelving.   His A-B-B-A set contains EIGHT (8) big motors...

He says he has to turn off some of the passenger car lighting otherwise the current draw is astronomical !!

Cheers.

This is some paperwork from the RRI model, going back to 1903. The stuff with the burn marks is from a fire in the company HQ. These are locomotive reports, all from 1938. Very few are in private hands today.

And some stuff from Tweetsie RR, the brochure is probably from it's first year of operation:

Also, this:

The upper right sheet is really cool, as it's filled out for locomotive # 207, dated 1960. ET&WNC # 207 is better known to rail fans as Southern RR # 630, currently on the NS steam program. It's also the first locomotive I ever got a cab ride on. My parents saw it and 208 (better known now as SRR 722) on a daily basis in Elizabethton, TN until they moved to Florida...

Bought a beat up shell running  Marx 1666 because it had the steam chest smoker which emits a lot of smoke.

Waiting for a Marx 666 in real nice condition to replace its stack smoker with the stem chest one.

Waiting on a Marx 333 smoker as well.

Used to have Marx many years back but sold them now just wanted a few pieces to have fun with.

My favorite antique dealer was back from his "vacation" yesterday so I went shopping. Brought home a 3424  Wabash Walking Brakeman boxcar in good shape. The Wabash went through Pittsburgh for awhile so wanted it. The still use the Wabash tunnel through Mt. Washington. In the day the RR built a bridge across the Mon. and had a big multi-story warehouse in downtown Pittsburgh. It burned in the late 40s and I remember us driving past it and you could see the burned and soggy wet contents where he walls had collapsed.  Sat there for a long time it seems until it was torn down. Also picked up a derelict KW transformer very cheap, brought t home, cleaned it good, put a new cord on it and works like new !! A "find". Now I ave two extras.

My grandpa has been looking for a good transformer for a year or so now, and I found this great ZW at the Pittsburgh Antique Mall in Castle Shannon for $50! I brought it home and tested all four outputs and the two whistle buttons, and it all works perfectly. It is all original except for the lack of the Lionel nameplate on the top.

Went to a "toy train show" about a mile from my home yesterday and picked up three more Dimestore Dreams cars and Lionel Rico station for $20.00 that needs just a bit of work. (But I'll probably "bash" it anyway.)

Not much O27 anything there, some American Flyer S from the 50s, and tons of Lionel.  Almost no Marx even worth bringing home.

Did get dozens of contacts for everything from track to custom decals, though.

Andre' s (River Leaf Models) Ball Breakers (pool hall) and Scuttlebutts (gentlemen's club) for the "other side of the tracks". Yes, my layout will have a seedy side of town where proper ladies and gentlemen(?) Would not dare to venture, especially at night.
These will reside in the vicinity of Spiders, another of Andre' s creations.

Don't forget to remove the 4 screws on top, and take a peek at the rollers

Nice find.

I always wanted to do a custom plate for one vs the logo.

I think a mirror on top so we could see ourselves grinning would be funny.

A nicely printed list of whistle signals.

A picture of you in an engineers cap for Gramps to grin at?

Thanks! A couple weeks ago I went to that same Antique shop and they had a display case with a bunch of o-gauge. They had a 90's scout set (No box, no track, no transformer; nothing but the engine with broken drive rods, non-whistling tender without a coupler knuckle, and cars with missing wheels and rust everywhere). They were asking $200 for it!?! But the rest of the prices were reasonable. No steals. Since, someone bought the whole collection and removed the display case.

I didn't have time to take it apart at the time, but I did half an hour ago, and it all was fine. It's a really nice transformer; especially for the price.

My grandpa recently retired, so I printed out the words "Happy Retirement" and cut the paper to fit the circle where the nameplate used to be nicely. He got a kick out of that!

Thanks! Yah, I was looking at some of those on eBay, but it's not a big deal. I decided that it wouldn't really be worth it to buy one of those because a lot of small children will be using it, so it's not gonna make sense to make it look good. I'm a collector and operator, but my grandpa really only runs trains, so he doesn't care anyway. Thanks, though!

He really was! We needed another powerful transformer with more than 2 variable outputs for the upcoming expansion to the Christmas layout this year. We basically add a couple square feet each year, but this year, we're also gonna add a lot more track and a couple more loops. We're still in the planning process, but it's almost there!

Keith,
The logo plate, used but "good enough", is something to scan for at shows for George, and some pocket change. Offer again the next year . That's my M.O.

Funny. I've seen them but never thought much about them.

So I took a good look, and found some, and think there will be one in my more distant future. A very cool building.

For the first 14-years of my life, I lived with my grandparents in Oakland, CA in the Fruitvale District.  Yes, it was the same Grandpa that had the famous 1/2" scale STEAM railroad running around the basement.  Immediately next door to our house was a SIGNAL Gas station.  I used to visit and help "Roy", the attendant, as I got older.  He would give me free cokes, on occasion.
Yes--  I have that Lionel SIGNAL tank car too.  Also a SIGNAL patch and a SIGNAL clip board and a large SIGNAL enameled sign. I wonder why ??  (grin)

Though a tiny bit to young to actually remember Signal being open, I loved old gas ads, and signs as a kid. But I don't remember ever seeing Signal with the flag logo before either. So I did some searching, and didn't find as much as I had hoped. But this gas station forum page was interesting reading.

I at least expected a Wikipedia page or reference, but AlliedSignal co was all there was and the is nothing there for Signal on pre-merger(with an old Signal pump shown)

Somewhere else said it wasn't the same Signal gas company that merged.

Do you have enough knowledge to write that Wiki page?

I always forget because "full service" is non existent today, but I earned a few sodas myself sitting in the garage, or in the shade of the old Pegasus sign waiting on a breeze, or for the "ding-ding" of the air chimes to break the thick summer air.

Winter was worse, cooped in a fume filled building wishing for more heat. Hammering ice chunks off wheel wells, and cleaning frozen windows. Salt and water/ice/snow from the sides of cars, and the parking lot would saturate my pants fully, and they would stand up alone to mid thigh if they dried on me before going home for bedtime.

I wouldn't have skipped it to work at the theater.

Years before I could legally be there for a pay check, we could help for an hour then had to leave, so we took turns. I could pull in near twenty in tips on a good day plus pay later. I was dirty often, but loaded for a pre-teen. The owner died right after I was there for a paycheck too, only two or three paid weeks.

My wife picked this one up for me at a thrift store.  It is a Party Lite school house.  I never heard of Party Lite, but this is like a Department 56 building.  However, the intent is that you light it with one of Party Lite's candles, thus a hole in the roof.  My photos show the bell tower hides the hole pretty well.  It looks pretty good in my village.  I placed an o gauge 1 1/2 inch tall figure beside the school marm, and he is just a smidgeon taller; just right.  I'll cover the roof and back holes and put some electric light in it eventually.  There is even a teacher with a blackboard and a couple students in the left hand window.

When I got back Monday from visiting the grandkids for the weekend on the door step waiting for me were the cars I ordered from MB Klein. Since Andy Hummel gave me a list of weaver wood chip hoppers I have been on a quest to find them. I know some I will not find because a few were custom runs. Here are the latest two I picked up. Now I have 6. I have to get loads for four of them yet. A couple of pics.................Paul

I mean, doesn't everybody have a mini bar in their chariot?   Maybe if Google starts producing those self driving cars we can finally forget the horror of drinking and driving.

That was really nice thing your coworker did. Now that your working as a contractor, it will be along time before you really retire. Especially if your good and like  what you do. Of course the advantages are you can work when you want to, not when you have to.  I think congratulations is the right word..

Wound up finally acquiring a 3rd Rail SP 4-10-2 #5021, an engine I never thought I'd find.
All a result of dumb-luck, to boot!
I won an auction on the big auction site for another 3rdRail engine, but after the auction ended, I was informed that the engine wasn't actually available for sale.
As a means of making amends, I inquired if the seller happened to have any other 3rd Rails avialable for sale, and as chance would have it, this was one of them.

This one was currently no. 1 on my most wanted list.

Now to keep a look out for SP&S #700.

I own this one also, you're going to love it.  One of my favorites.  Enjoy!

Got a set of lightly used Polar Express scale heavyweight passenger cars off the 'Bay.  Was forced to the top of my price range but managed to win the auction.  The set has the baggage car, old (abandoned?) toy car, 3 coaches, and the observation car. Just need to snag a diner &, of course, the scale PE Berkshire. No pics to share, as of yet, but it should look great next to my Gold set.

Got this MTH Railking ALCO RS-1 in New Haven a while ago. The colors and detail are real nice, basically premier quality at railking price. I also found this K5LA and couldn't resist because its my favorite horn. It seems to be from the 80s and has 2 Nathan cones and 3 Amtrak cones. All the bells look to be the wide font versions except bell #1.

Saturday I picked up a dirty, scroungy looking Lionel 2018 with a nice tender for $20. It buzzed but wouldn't run.  Took it apart and spent about 4 hours cleaning and lubing it then it started running. The shell was beat up and needed paint and while pondering this I remembered I had just bought a nice, like new engine shell from a Forum member numbered 2026. Same as the 2018 so put them together and have a like-new engine that is a great runner. Fun to take a chance.

Well today I went shopping at Menards. And I purchased a new tool storage cabinet. So now I will be able to find all my tools.  First thing I need to find them all. They are all over this house from all 3 bed rooms, all kitchen draws, near the washer and dryer, you guys see them clutterd at the layout, and in the garage. Then I purchased more lumber yesterday from Menards.  For another project I am doing.  And then I purchased a new shop vac to try and keep the breezeway as clean as I can.

The Porter with the dinner chimes answers questions I've long wondered.  I have a set of those chimes and wondered if they were meant to be portable and played horizontally as pictured.

I've had dinner on Canadian National.  To quote a favorite Canadian comedian, the ham in my ham sandwich was so thin, the pig hardly felt it coming off his arse.

Yes - Page 18, Braised Duck Cumberland, is my favorite. Also like page 56, Great Northern RR, Chicken Pie.

I'm jealous.

...Oh great! Now I'm hungry too

Let me know if you want a copy of Martha Washington's spiced pear recipe to follow that duck dinner.

Great stuff with some Calder's ice cream

Had an interesting experience today. Was in an antique store and a dealer had a mint in-the-box Lionel pre-war O gauge set. Everything was like new including the big box. The original price was on it, in pencil, $7.50  !!  A day's wage when it was new. It is set #131  with a 248 engine in green paint.  Original  O gauge track in the box. The guy didn't know what he had and I think I could have bought it for less than $150. I passed on it because I am an operator not a collector. Hope someone picks it up who appreciates it.

I don't know if I've asked this before but does this cannon actually work? Cause if that was so that would be AWESOME!!!

so......go back to the shop...buy the set, then run it!

Given the recent demise of Weaver.... I had to (and the price was right). And yes, I know the Powhattan Arrow didn't have baggage cars. John Q Public isn't going to give a rip when they see this running on our modular layout. My GGD set likely will never leave my house.

Now I've got the first, last and two add-on cars from the Weaver 5 car set. Patience, and I may eventually pickup cars 2-4.

Had a few items show up this week. Got a pair of Weaver Dow Chemical tank cars (another chemical company I got to tour in high school Chem class) from another Forum member. Also picked up more lumber loads for a Center Beam Flat Car project I'm working on. Got an MTH A&W Root Beer box car (I grew up drinking the stuff and I still do, albeit diet now). And the big item was a pair of MTH ATSF GP38-2's which were really impressive.

The last backorder item came into Side Track Hobbies a few weeks ago so I went down and picked it up plus several items they had been holding for me. Besides a PH180, some figurines, and a MTH AFT 70' full dome car to add to my MTH AFT train I run at NCT shows, the coolest item was the new Lion Chief Plus NYC RS-3.  I got this engine to also run at shows to show folks interested in O gauge how simple it is to get into O and how easy and neat command control is.  While at Side Track, I bought a Lionel caboose to go with it.  Can't wait for the next show.

After taking a break from trains for a few years I couldn't resist buying a Atlas O California Zephyr observation car. I bought a CB&Q Silver Penthouse and ordered a set of Silver Solarium decals from LBR Enterprises. Personally I think Atlas missed a mark by not doing the Silver Solarium in non Amtrak! I have traveled on the Solarium and Lariat several times and wanted the models of them. Going to disassemble them and paint the interiors as they are currently and load them with passengers. Should be a fun project!

Very nice, RT!  Always desirable to have the 5 striper.  I might have tried saving the paint on the Williams shell I own, had it been that paint scheme.

BTW, I haven't forgotten the recommendation you gave me on ERR upgrades.  Other priorities intervened but now I'm ready to call Boxcar Bill.  I still have the scale MTH GG1 that I want to convert.

Last Thursday, I went to a nearby Tuesday Morning store.  They have a well stocked toy area with some great prices on many items.   I found 2 Corgi Heroes Under Fire fire engines.  One is a US53606 Peter Pirsch & Sons Canopy Cab Pumper lettered for the Milwaukee Fire Dept.  The other is a US53607 Peter Pirsch and Soms Closed Cab Sedan decorated for Metropolitan Fire Dept. of Sarasota Springs, FL.  The retail was $69.99 each but I paid $19.99 each.  In the past, I've found many greatly discounted Corgi diecasts in  Tuesday Morning stores.  Check'em out!

This may get TMCC also in time right now I'm digging out from moving finally finished moving this past Friday now I have boxes on top of boxes and we went to a smaller place to top it off I gained a garage which I already lost but plan to have one heck of a garage sale soon lol. I have a GP-9 (NYC) I need to put TMCC in also as the electronic E-unit died so now is the time but need to find it and get set up to do both before I go buying so it's going to be a while.

It's Labor Day weekend, which means Christmas is hitting the shelves of a retailer near you!  It also means it's time to start tuning up the Polar Express & getting it ready for the season!

Here my PE GP7 brings my new-to-me set of PE Heavyweight passenger cars out of the (imaginary) storage yard to the (imaginary) maintenance facility for pre-season prep. The set consists of the baggage, abandoned toy, and observation cars, as well as 3 coaches.  I added the dining car new from Pat's, though the maintenance shop will have to call the manufacturer, as it's missing a brake shoe off the end of one of the trucks.

I also upgraded my power to a Z-4000.  Sorry again for the low-quality cell-phone video.

PE GP7 Pulling Heavyweights

This weekend was payback time, as I owed a good friend my services in exchange for a number of old radio finds at yard sales.  I buffed out his car, a gorgeous '58 Pontiac Parisienne that he's auctioning at Hershey next month.  As buddies will do, he tried to pay me just the same, which I politely refused.  Instead, he handed me this....an offer I couldn't refuse

I believe this 2046 dates to 1951 and appears well cared for.  I did spend a couple of minutes touching up some paint chips after giving it a bath.

The icing on the cake was a set of cars to go with it.  All in equally good condition.  My limited reference material doesn't show the 2046 heading any set, which I find hard to believe.  ( found it in the '53 catalog, heading a number of 027 sets  ???) It's the biggest PW offering next to the 773 and the shell has it's roots in the prewar 226.  IMHO the tender should have been the same as on the 773.  The 2046W looks diminutive behind that hulking boiler.

Hoosier Daddy?!

It's not rare or anything but it's cool because the McBay seller scammed me!

It came to me in the opposite of running and hadn't been tried in probably the last dozen years judging by the gunk in the motor and the dust inside the body...
But in true Marx fashion, a touch of elbow grease and some Kroil and ZOOM!!! Away it went at mach 10 around my little oval. Cleaned up the body and re-assembled (both the FM and caboose) and it's ready to drag some tin.
