@Guttersnipe,   If I get back to Huron before we leave SD, I'd be happy to get some pics.  I guess it's an EMD model ?  The yard had 2 gutted SD40-2's to cut up also, perhaps they'll be first to get the torch.  (OGR) Curt in SD does excellent photography, perhaps he'll swing thru Huron sometime & visit Barti Metal Recycling,  Jeff is the office guy to grant yard access.

That would be fantastic. Memorial of an old war horse.

Saw these on the forum before and bought them on the eBay/Hobbyspeed account. ------Lionel boxcars.20230427_080316

Dabbed some paint on the roof walkways,  the ladders and rungs and gave the trucks a little to bring out detail.    Still have to adjust the height of a couple couplers to get them correct.

Have a good Thursday all.

Nice, but having been dubbed they youngest dirty old man in captivity, some fifty years ago, in High school, would love to see more of the second car.

I saw an ad for this somewhere, I forget. Doesn't matter, as 'cool' as I might think this is, it's one of the goofiest impulse buys I have ever done...

It's called an Impact Train Horn. It's a cordless driver, in this case, I got DeWalt to go along with my set of MAX20 tools, but there are many types. Very loud and obnoxious, I would probably get arrested if I set it off in the backyard. Maybe New Year's Eve, or Fourth of July.

This week, I picked up these two Atlas BNSF Berwicks from a friend. I'm glad Atlas just cataloged more of these because they are one of the nicest pieces of rolling stock ever made in O-Scale.

That’s good to hear. I was thinking about a few of the Berwicks from the new catalog. 👌

Amen to that.  Atlas O is quite literally why I am still into O scale.  Although I think the crown jewels may go to the Trinity 5161 cu.ft. hoppers or the Maxi-IV intermodals...

Bought another one of these.  I was so blown away by this car after it was unpacked, decided not to paint this brand new car.  Instead, it will be the observation car in a fantasy excursion train.  Later today I'll take photos of the car and post them in a separate thread to showcase its uniqueness among LIONEL 15" aluminum pax cars--it really is quite unique.

Still needed one to paint as a prototype UP car acquired from Milwaukee Road and one showed up through an ebay saved search earlier today.  Problem is that it's NEW just like the previous one.  This UP project won't get started for a while, so the search for a used example will continue while this one will be a reserve.

Back on my 'York Haul' post here with the Class A (20-3036-1), I might have mentioned that the original inner wrapping was missing, as was the outer box. Well, I don't know how I'm going to get an outer box, but I did remember seeing in one of MTH's shipping updates an item that I subsequently ordered last week, a pack of MTH "Locomotive Wrapping Material", 60-1001:

Locomotive wrap for class-a 20-3036-1

This includes (25 I think) sets of inner foam wrap, MTH-branded plastic outer wrap and ribbons for lifting your hefty steamers into and out of their spaces in the styrofoam trays. While it's true I'm only going to get to use at most three of these sets (my Anniversary Dash-8 and NKP Berkshire #765 being the other eventual recipients once I get or make some sort of styrofoam trays for them), it was worth having for when I transport this loco to get its Proto-3 upgrade, so the remaining ones will find a use somewhere, if not in my own collection, then in someone else's

I'm going to pick on you. Brother. If you can make Styrofoam trays,  You can make outer boxes, and would not it be nice to have well stained high gloss wooden box for each one, don't you think they deserve it, or even better don't you think YOU deserve it

What I have is the Hot Wire Foam Factory scroll table. The material I have is those 1.5" thick styrofoam shipping boxes (ProPak  brand) used to ship frozen meat with dry-ice bags (my mother has been ordering meats this way on a semi-regular basis):

styro-stack

As you can see, I've got a surplus stack of these (even more than what's in the photo) in various sizes that I can mine for flat slabs to cut up, pin and glue (with styrofoam-specific glue, also from Hot Wire Foam factory). While directly copying a the cavities of a locomotive container is beyond any normal person's capabilities (as far as I know), I can stack flat slabs with cutouts to more-or-less mimic the shape of a typical diesel or steam loco with additional blocks to keep detail work from being subject to the pressure of the locomotive (particularly important for steamers) lying on its side.

Sourcing corrugated cardboard in sizes sufficient to enclose the final shape of these (so far hypothetical) containers will be a little trickier. And as for the finely-finished wood cases, I'd need a workshop and carpentry skills. Unfortunately I lack the space for the former and thus a facility to develop the latter

Sounds good to me.  If I had your talent, though, I would go ahead and line the cavity with a nice velvet. of the road color including the front of the Styrofoam, Then build a nice, varnished wood box around the Styrofoam, and put a Framed and hinged Plexiglas plate on the front.  Again You, the money you spent and the model all deserve the best.

@coach joe posted:

Railride, don't those Styrofoam chests come inside cardboard boxes or are they wrapped in plastic?

As they come from QVC, they're just taped up and labeled like any other shipping box. According to my brother, who is home to receive the shipments from UPS, maybe one time out of ten they'll come in a cardboard carton with the styrofoam box inside.

The LIFOAM (makers of the ProPak styrofoam shipping cartons/coolers) website lists them as being sold with cardboard outer boxes, but maybe QVC gets them without the cardboard, or separates them for use in non-perishable shipments. The lids slot into recesses in the lip of the box, so they're pretty secure once taped up.

As an aside,  I see some people are re-selling their used foam cartons on Ebay. Viable, I guess after seeing what some of them cost new at retail.

I wanted the Saturn V as soon as I saw it once I was on the web site I figured I would add some other things.  My daughter served in the USAF for 4 years so the flat with Power Wagon was a no-brainer.  I already had red, yellow and Army versions of the Power Wagon, never saw a blue one on the road, or off, so I had originally passed on it but why not.  And the deuce and a halfs were just too good to pass up. I think the USAF Power Wagon is just a touch lighter than the blue one.

The true NO-BRAINER was forgetting to order the power pack for the Saturn V.  That brain fart cost me another shipping and processing fee.

The backstory on this car.
My Grandson just graduated from the Black Bird Academy in Nashville TN. He studied sound engineering. He also has a band. He is working with Clair Global, he’ll be working on the setting up of the Taylor Swift this weekend.  When this showed up on EBay I thought it was nice tribute; but also thought graphics would look better on a boxcar. I tried to stimulate interest at METCA to create such a car; but found out that a boxcar with guitar graphics did not make the cut for the Nashville convention. So here is the flat car with crates of Martin & Co guitars. Lionel didn’t even put a Roadname on the flatcar, ugh.

Paradise and Pacific did a special run of Weaver tank cars for the 25th anniversary back in 2000. They had several cars left, so I bought a set. These will get the Kadee/Intermountain treatment.

Along with the Delaware and Hudson paint scheme. When I first ran these I finally understand why the motors  need to be rewired in series. What a difference! And super easy to do. Thank you sir. Your purchase inspired me to get those. After I got the weaver Pennsylvania sharknoses I saw your video. I thought I need the D&H ones as well! Those do run nice and smooth. I had to add lock washers to the dummy couplers because they seemed too loose and vibrated the locos like crazy.

Not bought, but a birthday gift last month… this is a pair of bookends showing the Cincinnati Union Terminal. They are made by Rookwood Pottery and were originally made to celebrate the opening of the Terminal - sets were given as gifts to dignitaries at the terminal’s dedication on March 31, 1933. Since two of my favorite lines stopped at the terminal back in the day, figured these would be a perfect addition to my train collection.

Great buys everyone, I just bought this Hurst stepper motor with brake and beautifully made aluminum bracket to get my turntable back in operation. It goes to my PTC 3 (programmable turntable controller), made by NYRS PTC 3/PTC 4, out of Ft. Worth Texas. It allows 99 stops, head-end and 99 tail-end. It works on a memory basis, and is very accurate. Happy Railroading Everyone IMG_8264

Got word that Cedar Point had Lionel produce an O gauge version of their number 22 Myron H. I had to make a special trip to pick up one as I had worked there for a few weeks last year (that's a different story for a different time). I had the crew sign the box as I knew them from last year. i visited Cincinnati Union Terminal years ago, when I was in Cincinnati for a business Meeting. I also walked across the Roebling  bridge to get to a Reds game which was a few blocks from the bridge. (The hotel was in Ludlow KY).

Okay, these are really great.  For those interested, Rookwood Pottery makes these bookends in at least three glazes: white, brown, and the color Apple55 has purchased: https://rookwood.com/products/union-terminal-bookends.  If only I had the room ... sigh. And, how awesome it would be if the pottery produced other rail stations.  Now I'm going to have to go buy those US train station postal stamps as a consolation :-).

I had to make a special trip to pick up one as I had worked there for a few weeks last year (that's a different story for a different time). I had the crew sign the box as I knew them from last year. My face says it all holding the box.  20230507_14523020230507_19224420230507_114326

Very nice, Happy Birthday!

i visited Cincinnati Union Terminal years ago, when I was in Cincinnati for a business Meeting. I also walked across the Roebling  bridge to get to a Reds game which was a few blocks from the bridge. (The hotel was in Ludlow KY).

Thanks, Bob. Never knew there was a Roebling Bridge in Cinncy. Needless to say, I’ve been over the Brooklyn Bridge more times than I can count (interesting that the Cinncy towers have some resemblance to the Brooklyn towers!!!), and I’ve driven across the Roebling Bridge near me in PA.

Not sure of the scale… what is smaller than Z scale They are definitely not suitable to O, but they will look fine with some of my train books!!!

Yes I'm afraid they do look small, and yes they do look like great book ends. My only problem with book ends is that my shelfs are so full I have to older books in tubs ,seal them up and put them in the shed.

I've been looking at these for a while, and since I haven't bought any lately I figured I could sneak them in under the radar.  I was mostly successful.  The first is the Hooker Chemical Tank Car, 6-17909.  The second is the Santa Reefer with ETD, 6-17302.  Both were NIB from the bay for a very reasonable price.  I bought the reefer specifically because it had an ETD.  It seemed to me that you had to by a set of cars in order to get one with an ETD, and that would have been a non-starter.  I looked up buying/making/installing ETDs and saw only one significant thread, but that was back in 2015.

Probably the coolest thing I will buy this year .... thinking I have used up my fair share of the Train Gods Benevolence ...

Found a lurking " Unknown maker " little clockwork saddletank 0-6-0 on ebay ( and yes its 00 scale dont hate me for posting it here , all my friends are O gauge'rs)

When I first saw the pics I had that little tingle in the back of my neck happening , for a LOT of reasons ... if it IS what I "think" it could be .. its a rare beast , and its a VERY long way from home ( it was for sale in Pennsylvania !)

I have never even seen a photo of one .. and believe me I have looked all over the webs for a good few years now , as the maker is a pet "love" of mine ... and indeed it turns out to be a John Van Riemsdijk controlled clockwork 0-6-0 Peckett saddle tank locomotive .. made in the 50's by the man himself in his workshops in gloomy old England and in numbers of only the few hundreds at best .. its predecessor the flat sided tank model ( which I had seen a photo of ) only existed in a run of 500 that were sold thru a retailer friend of his ... I have been supremely lucky to find and acquire 3 different O gauge JvR's and I have posted them here and there .. but this , this is my white whale !

I had to bid for it unconfirmed and as such didn't go wild for it , and despite a last minute flurry of bids , it ended up being a super bargain if it WAS what I thought it to be , or a silly waste of good money if it wasnt LOL!

Luckily today it was confirmed to me that it is indeed a JvR and I now have seen the article of it from Michael D Fosters #4 volume of British Toy Trains , Thanks to Fred van der Lubbe (sncf231e) from the Netherlands for running to his library to help me out via our email exchanges !

Its quite possible people here will be sick of me posting it .. so be gentle with me lol

@Fatman- your scale transgressions will be forgiven.......a very cool find to be sure. Let's hope it runs and we will be expecting a video documentary.

@Dennis Holler- another neat engine. I don't know how you keep finding these gems in disguise.

@coach joe- Thanks. I've been hunting for a LIRR Steam switcher but the RS-1 was sitting there staring back at me from the computer screen. Couldn't resist! Not that I need much help.........

You have to get her running, and build a couple of four wheeled tall sided gondola's.  Not every layout had an amusement train for the kiddies to ride.  Go for it brother

Great Stuff everyone... @Fatman - what a great find!  I don't know how you keep coming up with these rarities (yes I am jealous )  As to gauge, well since I posted some "HO" awhile back I am in favor of doing whatever we can to spread the knowledge of our toy train history world wide, gauge or not.  I believe in "exemptions" for tinplate or historically significant trains like this one.  @Dennis Holler - Dennis, I think the Hudson is super but I admit I know next to nothing about "KTM" as a manufacturer.  I am interested in what function the two valves (one with a red handle and the other blue) handle at the base footplate of the tender serve?  At first I thought the loco might be live steam but I doubt it as I look closer.  Anyway its mysterious.  OBTW that wooden PRR boxcab electric is also neat.  The brass nameplate between the powered drivers is most likely Lionel perhaps you might post what it what is written on it  which might give us a date for the motor unit.

OK what do I have today.  Well given that Donnie Kennedy showed his new coffee cup I decided I might show mine.  This Central of Ga cup was a $5 purchase at the Austin Train show last weekend.  Now why on earth should a Texas fellow be interested in a railroad in Georgia.  Well here is the backstory... The Central of Georgia was formed out of the physical and financial impact of the Civil war on railroad lines in the South.  One of the lines consolidated into C of Ga was the "Savannah and Atlantic" railroad, a small portion of whose lines still exist as part of the NS system.  The Savannah and Atlantic came from a reorganization of the "Savannah and Tybee Island" railroad which had filed for bankruptcy just about as soon as it was finished in 1887 and it was sold at public auction in 1890.  This railroad was then absorbed into the Central of Georgia in 1895 and operated as the Tybee branch from 1895 until its closure in 1933.  The Tybee branch operated two American type locos that started out as coal powered but were quickly converted to oil to lessen the impact of smoke on the beach area.  This RR operated all year but was so busy carrying day trippers to the beach in season that it often operated double headed passenger trains.  Its demise came as a causeway for automobiles was constructed and finished in 1922 and cars soon took the place of passenger trains.

OK - so what is my connection? A number of years ago, my wife and I purchased a summer retreat home on Tybee island.  This is just about 15 miles roughly south east from Savannah (the total length of the Tybee Island RR was 18 miles).  Vestiges of the former RR line can still be found and the roadbed across the wetlands is still visible (now a hiking path).  It would have run just about 2 blocks from our house as it moved to the central part of the island.  So we share a heritage with the Central of Ga who operated the RR to our beach home.

Central of Ga coffee cup

Well that's my story today

Best wishes

Don

Nice car but I'll pass on this one. Would have been better if they wrapped the load with one of the old yards like Kleet.

I have a wife that loves teaching middle school age kids.  She says, "Someone has to love them." Along with the kids she liked a show called "Psych".  You might understand why I needed a pineapple car.  Finally found a postwar 6475 in my price range, nothing broken and 4 vats in excellent shape.  It took a 2nd busted up donor to get all good vat labels.  If you get one of these, be very careful in servicing and cleaning the vat labels.

It came along with a few other cars that were on my postwar list.

And an engine in good shape

Newly arrived from the Red Lion Road plant of the Edward G. Budd manufacturing company, in northeast Philadelphia, the consist for The Crusader.

Tranquil Hollow RR, NICE! I have the Santa Fe version of those passenger cars and there are some interesting differences. Questions: Did the baggage car come with interior LED lighting? Your models have vents on the roof, my SF version do not, are those original? The roofs on my SF look a little plain without vents, yours look next level, I like it.

Anyway, they are a great addition to your layout! Enjoy!

Scott, I received these today from EBay. It appears that the cars were new in the boxes. The flaps, except for one, were tight with no marks or creases. I will take a look because I don’t know if the lights are LEDs or not.

Somehow I didn't get the pictures but I hope you don't mind if I name my next passenger Car Tranquil Hollow.

Great Cup, as to the real world, presently the Tourist Railroad out of Ely Nevada is having a memorial to their round house cat "Dirt," and I believe they had a coffee cup with His picture on it. I use to have one, it disappeared, but I plan to get another. I have never been their and am not associated with them and yes this a plug. but what better way to promote the hobby then to support the real thing

No I don't actually love it,  Having done time at UPS and had the box showed more signs of damage itself, you could file a claim against the carrier,  but it looks more like bad packing.  The top of the cab level with the top of the box, doesn't look like it had any Cushing at all.  Looks like your only recourse is to take it up with the seller, or custom repair it.

Voices from Staten Island? Oh Boy!  Must sound like Ben Fiorello.

Bought a Lionel NYC RS-11 (6-18598) with TMCC from Cabin Fever Auctions last week. Picked it up on Friday so I didn't have to pay shipping. Had a nice day on the drive:  stop at the Allentown Farmer's Market on the way down, lunch out with my wife, and stop at Herbein's Greenhouse below Emmaus on the way home. The engine worked fine after the "usual" new-to-me used engine tune-ups: lube and oil, clean the wheels, replace a traction tire.

I'm using it to pull my Frank's Roundhouse Pacemaker boxcars.

That consist resonates with me. I used to pull a much more modest 6 car set of Frank’s PCM boxcars with the Lionel 8477 NYC GP9, followed by the Lionel NYC 6910 EV Caboose in PCM scheme.

Hi Mark,

I have all 21 of the FRH Pacemaker Boxcars; they obviously resonated with me (even my wife likes the colors). I had been pulling them with my 2344 A-B-A F3s but the TMCC RS-11 called my name and I couldn't resist. I had the 2344s when I was a kid and remember them well from running on our layout at home in the 50s and 60s. I like the 8477 too, but don't have it.

Got this last week, first time having a command crane car. This was basically brand new, not even a bit of dirt on the wheels.

I needed to adjust the outriggers, as they popped out too easily out of the box. And one of the bearings for the rotation mechanism was randomly popping out, that was fixed with some Loctite.20230512_1056222

I don't have the matching boom car, but I am keeping an eye out for one.

Didn’t mention it, but that RS-11 is a great engine. Mine was a victim of Sandy, but I almost recently rebought it from a fellow forumite. Another OGR member beat me to the punch. I do have the TMCC D&H RS-11, and I’m very happy with it.

Should be an interesting project, especially with a brass engine - best of luck. One note… the 3rd pic (the gray engine) is the Dreyfuss Hudson. The 2nd is the Commodore Vanderbilt, and the 1st is the Empire State Express. More good choices

Opened up the Dreyfuss.Unfortunately when you use packing peanuts and 40 year old egg crate foam to ship a brass engine and tender , chances are it won't make it in one piece. All good as buyer excepted return and shipping.

Back to listening to the voices to guide me into the next Hudson. Already have the cars for it!
