I really think it's the Gremlins that came with some of my not so great starter sets i sold. I think they hide under the train table, and when I'm not looking order and commit to buy things that show up on my door step.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. 🥹

So the Voices talk to the Gremlins and the Gremlins use the web and Donnie wins?  What an arrangement!

Two K-Line boxcars (new in box) and a box of Marklin switches and parts.  $ 60.00 for the lot.

One of the boxcars is going to donate a truck to another car that came with a broken truck.  It'll be replaced with trucks from my truck stockpile.  Wanted to put a correct truck on the car.

The value of used freight cars has fallen to the point that cars are more valuable for parting out than for running.

I went to Nasasau Hobbies yesterday to pick up my MTH UP auxiliary water tender and while looking at Nassau's custom MTH cars, I spotted an MTH tanker commemorating the US Navy's Blue Angels.  In past Memorial Day weekends, the Blue Angels preformed here at Jones Beach.  They always put on a great show and this tanker is perfect for the occasion

May have gone off the deep end.  Picked this stuff up yesterday.  65 or so plastic shoe size boxes of parts and trains needing repairs. 21 Cardboard boxes of trains and parts.  Included mostly Lionel O gauge items and parts but some HO (including Marklin and parts, some Standard Gauge, some #1 Gauge, some O scale (Diecast NW2 engine and cars). There were also two prototype signals.  I think one is from a switch and the other is some sort of Lantern plus a lantern that has been converted to a plug in light.  (The HO layout is from another expedition)

I looked at everything for over an hour trying to determine value but there was no way to calculate so went with gut instinct.  Then spent an hour trying to decide how dead I was going to be bringing all of this home and filling one side of the garage.  My wife's mini-van was packed front to back, including the passenger seat and floor!

I have no idea as to what I'm going to do with all of this stuff but I guess it's good since my wife said she won't kill me because then she would have to get rid of it all.20230521_150631_resized20230521_150636_resized20230521_150647_resized20230521_150655_resized20230521_150708_resized20230521_150714_resized20230521_150728_resized20230521_150742_resized20230521_150753_resized

It's better to be lucky than good all day long!   A friend of mine who does some train collecting called me several months ago and asked me if I was interested in some New York Ontario and Western passenger coaches.  I had no idea what he was talking about but I said yes, absolutely. I was sure no one made anything like that for that railroad so whatever they were, we can work with it.  And part of my layout is New York Ontario and Western. I half expected someone took some old kit cars and painted them or something  along that line. Well, when I looked at them as I took them out of the boxes, I wondered if this was  a fairy tale? Who actually made something like this in NYO&W colors and this nice?. They were all brand new and really nicely detailed These really were a find. Gorgeous cars, Bill!  You must be so glad you said yes. Those make a great looking consist and look especially good on your layout.

Thanks for posting.

Made it back home to PA over the weekend and found two packages waiting for me…

First up, two beautiful gondolas from the great folks at NJ HiRailers - another entry in their NYNJ waterfront series (got an engine on order from them later this year!!!). These are Premier cars and are nicely detailed. The loads are VERY heavy, but can be easily removed. Since I lack the skills to weather them, I might just replace one with some pipes.

Next, are two cars I ordered from forum sponsor @E-Z Catch Train Shop. Bad influence @bobfett posted (a few pages ago) about a special run of Reading & Northern tank cars. Since the R&N runs through my neighborhood of NE Pennsylvania, and since I had a few of their engines, I HAD to order a pair. UNFORTUNATELY, when I went in to order them, I noticed another special run of NYC jade green hoppers… being an NYC fan, I couldn’t resist. Woe is me 😁😁😁 So I ended up with one of each. These are nicely done Raiking cars - may have to order the 2nd of each (Woe is me 😁😁😁).

Finally, I have to report a new, until now unknown disturbing version of the voices. The big reason I was back home last weekend was because we had tickets to the movie simulcast of the Metropolitan Opera Saturday matinee performance at the Cinemark Theaters which is just off Glenmora Boulevard in Moosic, PA. Just down the road is Grzyboski’s (a place with which I have a passing acquaintance). My car, it seems, hears the voices, and I found myself in their parking lot… A few weeks ago, I had seen a couple of 2-car sets of 21” passenger cars on their website (I really have to stop buying 21” passenger cars) which ran on the PRR as connecting service to other railroad. Since I already have a set of 21” Broadway Limited cars, I remember thinking that a few cars with connecting service to The Chief would be a nice addition to my roster. And so…

Not just mice, really nice

I guess this qualifies as COOL, at least for me. Southern Pacific stuff is not always easy to find in O scale. This K-Line SP Overnight boxcar arrived today in the mail. It was NIB, at least until I took it out of the box and put it on the track.

It would be cool in any gauge. I have seen one of them, and that was custom painted

I got a quote back from Tim at Mianne Benchwork today and placed the order for my 4' x 18' layout extension.  It should take about 3 weeks.

I have a LOT of trains and shelving units to move out of the way to make room for the extension.

And, of course I'll be buying some plywood.  I don't have a vehicle that can transport 4x8 sheets of plywood; I will have to have it delivered.

The freight between here and Australia is killer.  Have a distant (take that both ways) relative in Sydney, and she wanted a book that one of our other relatives had, (family heir loom)  The book is still in print, but again a particular possession, and It cost three times it's value to send it to her,  Yet the sentimental value made it worth it  congrats on your new addition to your library

That is why, not only Model railroaders, but just about everyone needs a pick-up truck.  If you know how to attach plywood to benchwork, though, why don't you save a few bucks and build the bench work yourself.  Home Depot also rents trucks by the hour.  if you pick the right time they will have some kind of discount, and the truck would only be an additional $60.00 for three hours

I rarely need to haul anything as large as a sheet of plywood.  I have a large SUV which can handle long items (10' PVC pipe) but it can't quite handle something 4' wide.  For these rare occasions I have the items delivered.  Lowes will only charge me $35 to deliver the plywood.

I have built my own benchwork in 2 of the houses that we have lived in.  I have a 28' x 28' trainroom in our present home, and I wanted an around the room layout.  Also, I wanted 2 levels (O gauge on lower level and G gauge on upper level).  I was not interested in tackling such a large project.  The Mianne benchwork was a great solution.  It took a lot of plywood to cover that benchwork.

I guess we all have different priorities in life and model railroading.

That's a bargain and no risk damaging your SUV. I needed about 400 bricks for a patio expansion recently and the mason yard wanted $200 to deliver. I made 3 trips and got them all to the house as I needed them.

PSJ,  Sorry to pry, but what was the weight of those bricks?   Still three trips is less the $200. Vince, (pun) intended, any project in evolving O and/or G gauge's is a large project.  I'm having a hard time trying to picture what you are doing.  My first thought on this writing was shelf work, like that of Trainman Televison's 1/20.2, but then you seem to be talking about some kind of mid-room level. And then, about the SUV, back before I had my pickup I had 77 full size Oldsmobile, wagon, I used mainly for pulling my boat. (better for pulling out of water, because of extra weight on the back wheels) but it had a bed that I did have a four by eight piece of plywood in/on so that I could put a couple of bails of hay on , when taking my buddy's horse to the races.  Sorry for teh consternation.

Thanks for the info.  Curious I looked it up, I found none on the online book place.  Checked around.  Sounds like a good book.  Internet searched for fun,  lots of high prices and all of a sudden, a used one on the online book place.   I wont tell the price, but a burger and fries meal is about right.  It's coming book rate, 2 weeks, should be fun.

OK Bob.......how many miles from the mason yard ?

3 trips at  $ .85 per mile and the outlandish amount for your hourly rate, comes to what ?

( I was pretty young so I have an excuse .....when I hauled 700 to 800 lbs. of old farmhouse 12"×12" × 4ft foundation stone from my brothers property 60 miles away in my shorty 1992 Dodge Caravan / 3.3 V6..............13 trips.

Maybe it's wisdom 🤔.......but somehow I feel more intelligent now! !???

Ok Ridicules', but true. Back in the late sixties, my Dad sent me to pick up to the Hardware/Lumber store, twice to pick up six bags of Cement mix, in a 56 Buick sedan.  The point is that even then it would have been better to have a pickup,, and it was before vans came into being.  And had I shown up for a date in a van. her dad would not leg her go.

@VHubbard  at that price its a super bargain! Well done ... Yeah the US does have a few copies floating about , but 99% of sellers don't bother offering International Book Rate so it cost a bomb to ship here In most cases more than the cost of the book itself .

I am a patient man tho lol , with many saved searches ... so when it turned up online this week I can be pretty sure its the first time one had been locally listed in at least 4 years

Just purchased 47 Plasticville buildings for our seasonal neighborhood train layout. This will be our third year. Our first year had a polar express theme that was featured in CTT magazine and last year it featured Disney Frozen. This year we will try to create a 50’s themed layout featuring Plasticville buildings and Lionel accessories. Here is a picture of the Plasticville pieces we will invorporateIMG_3798

Selling more than I am buying since retiring, but every now and again picking up items from lines in the Northeast. Today I bought from Trainz two Atlas 50' PS-1 boxcars - Maine Central (Atlas 6585-1) and Napierville Junction (Atlas 8863). One was too expensive and the other pretty darn cheap so the purchase balanced out!  I don't know anything about Napierville Junction, but I saw reference to Rouses Point, NY online in an article. In the 70's I frequented a great bar with live bands in Rouses Point called the Saxony. Putt-putted over from Vermont on my Honda CB200T and would park next to a lineup of Harley Hogs and Kawasaki Z1000s.  Surprised I didn't get the stuffing knocked out of me just for having the gall.

That looks  like fun, just started here this year, so i'm going to have to look back at the last two layouts, but can't wait to see how this one turns out.  Would love to hear more about Neighborhood layouts, although I don't think it would apply where I live

@pennsyfan  As far as I can tell there were no lights on the end of the tail. There appear to be side marker lights.  This photo for the Wenona shows a horn on the top slope.  Wenona

1935  first two Beaver Tail cars were the Nokomis and Wenonah featured the sloped beaver tail and 2 curved windows. These versions also had the tongue off the end.

1936 - 37ish second pair of Beaver Tails the Omewe and Opeche and featured a change in the tail windows across the back and lost the tongue. There are marker lights on the top sides of these cars. This 1937 version is what Weaver apparently modeled.

1939 saw the Art Deco finned Beaver Tails - Miller, Merrill, Earling, and Mitchell. These appear to have a red marker light built into the top of the fin structure.

The SkyTops eventually replaced these in service.

My plan is to mount it on a board with strings to represent the needed ropes and blend in the scenery around it when it's done.

The yard was a 34 mile round trip

34 x 3 x .85 = $86.70......and according to the CEO, I work for free!
Besides, since all of the bricks had to be moved from the driveway to the back yard, we were able to break up the moving too.

Wait a minute Fatman...its NOT clockwork!  It says "Powered by a 6 volt or 41/2 volt battery" .  The box also reads" Made in England" so because its marked with the country of origin it was likely produced for export, which was how much of England's toy production in the immediate post war period was used (to generate hard currency at home). I tried "colectrotor" on my Google Search but no joy, not even one hit even an irrelevant one.  The box is very inexpensive cardboard construction hence it was likely a reasonably inexpensive toy when first offered.

Its cool, I like it, sort of an interurban type train.  Good luck finding info on it...please post if you do

Don

Don and Fatman,

I always love a Google search challenge.  By entering “Electrotor” with the quotations and then selecting Images, I found auction site hits selling the motors in British pounds, for 6 volts DC, and specifically for model trains, boats, and other toys supposedly from the 40s and 50s.  Cool find!

Give it a try … although I must say that name doesn’t exactly roll off the tip of the tongue, British accent or no :-). I wondered whether that choice may have affected sales.

Tomlinson Run Railroad

@Don McErlean and @TomlinsonRunRR  My Google-fu is strong LOL ... but occasionally I find things not even google ( or Bing, or DuckDuckGo) doesn't know about

I concur it was probably a cheapy set marketed by a third party who didn't even see fit to put their name on the box , I have an "inkling" it might be the infancy of the company Nulli Secundus ( Child's & Smith) , who in the early 50's briefly marketed a line of toys powered by electrotor, a rotating plane and helicopter ... perhaps this train set was them dipping their toes into the water ? All conjecture , just a theory ..

From .. https://fineart.hallsgb.com/au...?lot=110045&sd=1

However the Belgian/Dutch collector " Playbird" ( who's linked site is no longer active ) posted on a toy collector forum the only image of a set I could find in over a week of searching ... interestingly his box had the instruction label ( I havent got mine yet but it wasnt shown in the auction listing , so I am presuming it is gone ) ... but infuriatingly , said label has no manufacturer details either

Googling "Toby" with electrotor gains me nada as well lol

Well, the good folks at METCA have done it to me again… wasn’t able to resist one of their recent custom run Lionel H-15-44’s in New Jersey Central livery. While I don’t limit my purchases to a specific time frame or railroad, I have been trying to pick up pieces from any roads that ran in my current neck of the woods in NE Pennsylvania. From what I’ve read, Scranton was the western terminus of the NJC. Again, from what I’ve read, Raymond Lowey had a hand in the design of the H-15-44’s… while it doesn’t live up to the T1 or GG1, there is something interesting about their boxy look. I particularly like the cab windows. Another great job by METCA!!!

Interestingly, the paint scheme closely resembles my brother’s first engine (now under my care!!!) - a post war NJC 621 switcher.

And in an odd coincidence, I was in Scranton on Saturday for dinner, and on the way home, I passed the old CNJ Freight Station. I hope someone is able to restore the building.

And as for the confessional booth, Donnie, having two replaced knees, kneeling for a prolonged period of time is definitely off the table - forgive me fellow forumites for I have bought another train

At least this next consist is a Union Pacific! Got a great deal for the this 90's LTI Dash 8 from a fellow forum member! Super clean unit. I just cleaned out all the baby poop brown grease, cleaned up the gears, and put some red and tacky in the right spots. Didn't have any unibody tankers , so I took advantage of Trainz 10% sale. Along with a smoking UP caboose! It just brings me back to the 90's when I could only dream of being able to afford a dash 8. These were delivered yesterday. Just to be different I videoed the new box cars rolling down the track rather than static photos. These are all nicely detailed models, I'm pleased. And my first white box car, which in the real world probably didn't stay white for long! LoL

Okay, weird right, Lehigh Valley box cars on a western railroad. Probably not likely, but I got them because my son is off to Lehigh College, Bethlehem, PA this fall to pursue an EE degree. It's his freshman year, and I thought it would be nice to have a reminder of him on my layout.

Very nice Scott. IIRC there's a nice little railroad that used to run in those parts....you may want to look for some of their equipment to pull those cars.....

Have you driven by the Railyards recently.   Frequently I drive down the 10 Freeway here in Cali.  alongside the old SP yards, and I see some stuff you wouldn't necessarily believe.  About a year ago I saw an actual Caboose.  wasn't long before that, A feather Western Pacific, boxcar.  Anything can happen anywhere. The railroads have an empty car, as long as it runs and there is a load for it, it gets run.  By the way great looking car.

Excellent idea of the video Scott.

That slower speed allows a good look at each of the boxcars.  Nice.

I picked up two tank cars on the bay. The first was listed as boxed. When I looked at the box end I saw that it was the wrong box. When I pointed it out; the seller replied with a 50% off  offer. How could I refuse?

I think that the second car is unique. I’ve never seen it before. It was made by KLine.

Does the -98 on the proof of purchase mean that it was made in ‘98. I would like to see a catalog listing of this item.

I picked up these two pickle cars from another forumite. Then I saw the box car on the bay. I read and interesting article on another hobby forum. Someone questioned if Heinz actually shipped pickles that way. It turns out that Heinz labeled them pickle cars for the advertising value. They actually shipped cucumbers to the processing plant. They weren’t pickles till they were processed. I think I have enough pickle cars for now since I also have some of those Heinz great KLine billboard reefers.  After all how many pickles can a pickle packer pack in a proper pickle pack?

I went to The Train Doctors open house and parking lot sale this morning.
One of the vendors had these on his table with a sign 40’ cars $20  I asked if there was a volume discount for the 3. He said $50; to which I replied $45. He said sold. So I picked up 3 cars for 1/2 the price of 1. I always wanted a West India Fruit and Steamship Co car. Now I have 3 different numbers.

When we went inside I spied this car with a heavy price tag. There was a sign that everything was 15% off. I go way back with Rem and was looking for a better deal. I got 30% off. I was an “Airdale” in the Navy and never set foot on a ship even though our aircraft had a tail hook; but I couldn’t leave this car behind.
Oh there was also complementary coffee and donuts.

Well Bob, perhaps your wife will come to the conclusion that, “Wow, you know what: Bob needs, and deserves, a bigger layout “.

Not exactly a 'bought lately', but three "low-end-locos" were made into runners awhile back:

A little background. Way back in the "Your First train Set" thread, I posted a photo of my first train set. At the time I mentioned that I had wore out the drive gears on the locomotive, and had bought a number of similar locomotives as parts donors, intending to have the drivers replaced. The selected unit was an MPC motor unit from what I believe was a 4-4-2 starter-set loco. The other locos I acquired were a Black Cave Flyer loco, a Workin'on the Railroad set loco (the infamous plastic-drivered 0-4-0), and a duplicate of the 8601 loco that headed my first set. Ultimately, the repair shop I selected (Ridgefield Hobby) chose to simply place the MPC motor unit inside the 8601 shell, transplanting the siderods and siderod yoke (the piece fastened to the front of the motor that holds the siderod ends), and painting the driver centers to match the original. This gained me an 8601 that now contained a mechanical E-unit (the original was manual) and a working headlight.

But what of the other three locos?

Well, they were mostly complete. This type of loco when found on the used market tends to have one of two defects: either a missing boiler front, or more cripplingly, a broken siderod yoke. Without the latter, there's nothing to keep the siderods off the roadbed. Two of the three locos, Rock Island and Black Cave, had both defects plus missing pickup sliders. The Workin' on the Railroad loco was missing its tender. Over time, I managed to pull together enough spare parts to have a fighting chance of making these locos complete, and a chance encounter with a couple of Forum members who were parts dealers finally supplied tthese obscure parts, shortly afterward I was able to install the parts and make all three runners.

So why wait so long to post? Well, to be honest, these are bottom-of-the-line starter-set locomotives, not particularly "cool" in and of themselves. But I did update my "first train set" post with a 2023 addendum stating that the three aformentioned parts-donor locomotives were repaired and are now functional. This update actually generated additional likes, something I didn't expect, given my post was from 2020 and on the first page of a three-page thread

So for the benefit of those who supplied the additional likes, here are photos of the three runners who were essentially saved from the bin:

Below: two views of all three locomotives together:

LEL-all-1LEL-all-2

Below: the 8212 Black Cave Flyer from 1982. This locomotive originally had a boiler front and smokestack made of glow-in-the-dark plastic, much like the siderods and bell. I don't expect to be able to replace those with originals, but a siderod yoke and pickup rollers made this one into a runner. The adhesive-weakened decals (user-installed) I can probably replace by scanning them and printing reproductions on glow-in-the-dark sticker stock. I also received the set cars (an O27 boxcar, gondola and caboose, also with user-installed stickers)

6-8212

Below: 8601 Rock Island Line from 1976. It's an almost-duplicate of my first Lionel loco, except that it has plastic driver centers like the Black Cave loco. Mine had all-metal drivers, so maybe it was earlier production. This loco received a siderod yoke and roller pickups (the originals had sliding pickups). This unit is the only one of the three that was designed with an AC motor (albeit with manual reversing)

6-8601

Last but not least, is this 8803 from the "Workin' on the Railroad Timberline" set from 1978. This is the infamous "El Cheapo" plastic-wheeled loco with sliding pickups for the running rails (one can be seen just ahead of the front driver) and a reverse unit that consisted of a sliding switch arop the boiler. This loco needed the fewest parts--basically just the tender, which is ultra-cheapo in that those Symington trucks you see under it...are fake. They're part of the body casting and only two actual wheelsets exist under it. The same goes for the rest of the cars in the set. You also cannot hook a standard slope-back tender to this loco (I tried), but the plastic drawbar is too thick to work with the slot on the stamped-metal drawbars of most Lionel slopeback tenders.

6-8803

So there you have it. I don't really know what I'm going to do with these three beyond fixing missing/damaged decals and maintaining them in preserved condition. My fanciful idea was to park them in an on-layout rail museum...that is, if I had a permanent scenicked layout with the room for one (as an aside, this may be the first--er, probably only time in history that any of this type of locomotive have ever been seen sitting on Atlas track ).

But if I had a layout to do that, I'd be tempted to put something like a Mini Commander in them for giggles (is that even still available?) and sneak them out on the mainline once in a blue moon. At the same time, these are kinda rarities despite their cheapness. I don't know of any examples of this body style being used unaltered beyond 1978--as far as I know, this body was only used three times and that was it.

Gonna blame Aplles55 telepathy this time ...............RK streamline Pennsylvania passenger cars.

Came on FedEx this morning     Ages ago I had Lionel's aluminum set but sold them when the lettering began peeling off .

( Judy was out trimming bushes this morning....she talked to the FedEx driver and he told her he inherited a large display of trains from a relative in Philly and wants to be able to do a layout.      JUDY told him that he had to get involved with the O GAUGE RAILROADING ON LINE FORUM on the web.   They had a good discussion I heard. )

I notice Judy didn't tell the FedEx driver he should talk you.

Very sharp aluminum cars, BTW.

Does the diverging track slope downhill?

Thanks,

Judy does think I gots good smarts but...............

These cars are plastic though Joe. 🤔      ( maybe good though .....doesn't appear that the lettering will peel of of these. )

The diverging track drops 3 inches in the 58 inch run down to the engine yard.

I don't believe my Lionel and Rail King 027 streamliners will make a good consist for my recently acquired Lionel 785 Hudson so I'm trying to put together some HW passenger cars that'll work on my radially challenged layout and still look good behind 785.  Here's the start.

@coach joe -neat acquisitions, but who made the Budweiser brew house, that is really cool.  @Dallas Joseph- those are really neat looking passenger cars. They would be the right size for my layout, I have the Lionel aluminum cars but they are strictly for collecting (gift of a boyhood set from my brother in law)as they are too long to go around my layout. @pennsyfan- As a registered "tank-a-holic" I would say...don't despair that beautiful 3D from MPC in 1980. @Genemed- those are neat lights you are going to have one "lit" yard @FrankRazz- cool LI caboose, different colors comin and goin!

Best wishes everyone

Don

Joe;

Another possibility is the aluminum cars Lionel made in the early 80’s - I still see them for sale every so often. If I remember correctly, they are 15” cars. Depending on the size of your eventual layout, you could make do with three or four of them (they were sold individually, not as a set). My set is on the top shelf…
