I'M SURE THAT I MISSED THIS SOMEWHERE, BUT IS THERE A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOTH CHANGING A LOCO ID AND RESETTING TO FACTORY DEFAULTS WHEN USING A CAB-1L?

THERE IS PLENTY OUT THERE FOR CAB-1 AND CAB-2.  I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND ANYTHING FOR CAB-1L.

I'VE ALWAYS JUST FOLLOWED THE TMCC/CAB-1 INSTRUCTIONS BUT IT'S NOT WORKING THIS TIME.

I HAVE NEW LEGACY SANTA FE 2-10-4.  IT RUNS IN CONVENTIONAL MODE BUT I CAN'T GET IT TO RUN IN LEGACY.  THE LOCOMOTIVE CAN'T SEEM TO FIND IT'S ID #.  I'VE TRIED BOTH 1 AND 99....AND CHANGING IT TO 11 (5011).

NADA.

I LET A BUDDY BORROW MY OLD CAB-1 AND I'M GETTING IT BACK IN TWO DAYS.  BUT I'D REALLY LIKE TO GET THIS TO WORK AS IS.

EVERYTHING APPEARS TO WORK IN CONVENTIONAL MODE.  SMOKE UNIT IS ROBUST AND THE CAB LIGHT IS NOT BLINKING.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!

NO LUCK - 40 MINUTES LATER.

WHAT'S ODD.....AND LIKELY THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN....IS THAT IF I TURN THE CAB-1L BASE ON AND OFF, THE LOCO WILL CYCLE THROUGH FORWARD-NEUTRAL-REVERSE-NEUTRAL, ETC.....AS IF I'M TURNING A TRANSFORMER ON AND OFF.  ALTHOUGH IT'S PRESUMABLY DOING SO AT A FULL, CONSTANT 18 VOLTS.

IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT THE LOCO IS RECEIVING OR PROCESSING ANY LEGACY/TMCC SIGNAL.

THIS WOULD BE MY THIRD NEW LOCOMOTIVE IN A ROW THAT WILL LIKELY HAVE TO GO BACK TO NC - A VL CHALLENGER, A VL DAYLIGHT, AND NOW A LEGACY SANTA FE #5011.

BIG ORANGE AND I WILL BE GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE.  ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

IF YOU BUY NEW FROM LIONEL IN 2023, YOU'RE BASICALLY AN IDIOT.  WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY BUYING IS A FUTURE, CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF AN O-SCALE MODEL TRAIN.  THAT FAILURE MAY COME NOW.  IT MAY COME LATER.  IT WILL PROBABLY COME WHEN YOUR WARRANTY IS UP, NO REPLACEMENT PARTS EXIST, AND YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'VE SET $2,000 ON FIRE.

I've never had issues since getting the CAB-1L and Base however many years ago.  The process for resetting and changing IDs is essentially the same.  This loco has a fatal flaw and I just didn't want to admit it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't all Legacy engines respond to either ID #1 or ID #99?

The reality is that this engine and tender are probably going back to NC.....and I can't take it any more.

Appreciate the input though, fellas.

I have a Cab 1L. Have had no problems programming any engines ( I don't have any new stuff).

I'm sure you know the steps but....

Engine switch set to program. Turn on track power, hit "engine/ ID #/ set. Engine should respond with a horn/ whistle response.

Power off track, set switch to run.

Should be good to go.

That's what I've been doing.  But I appreciate the feedback.

When the locomotive started moving in forward-neutral-reverse with the Legacy Base hooked up/no longer in conventional mode, I figured the locomotive simply isn't getting the Legacy Signal.

Going to get my TMCC Cab 1 base and remote back.  Fingers crossed.  Hopes low.

Sorry about your aggravations and multiple failures, but insulting those of us who've had no problems won't make it any better .

Allow me to rephrase:

I am an idiot for continuing to buy new products from Lionel in 2023 considering the last three (expensive) steam engines that I have purchased have all had to be returned for warranty work, the last two of which were faulty boards.

Three in a row is tough to take.  Five grand should buy better QC, IMHO.

If you don't buy from Lionel then who are you going to buy from?  All manufacturers/marketers in our hobby have problems, some a little more than others but between them they're not a lot different.

Spend $5,000 in any other hobby, or even any other industry, and I'd agree with you but you're asking more from this industry than it can presently deliver.

Venting will not help.

Time to find a new hobby?

He who spends the $$$ is allowed to vent, IMHO.....with tact and respect.

I'm not letting the lack of QC at Big Orange chase me out of this hobby.  But I won't be purchasing any new locomotives from them for the foreseeable future.  Truthfully, I'm probably done purchasing new locomotives....period.

As the prices for these items continue to climb, so do my expectations.  I, personally, have noticed an increase in returns over the past five or so years while QC appears to be worse and prices have increased significantly.

Admittedly, I am a small sample size.....but it's MY sample size.

Well....everything is working with the Lion Chief remote.

Nothing is working in Legacy.

Antenna issue. Check for continuity between the locomotive handrails and the shell. Could be a damaged/missing handrail insulator, antenna wire between the handrails and the board pinched (both are easy fixes) or the antenna on the board itself has an issue (Lionel fix). Not the end of the world, and an easy fix you can do at home, in the case of the first two, in 5 minutes.

Agreed wholeheartedly.

Yes.  Notice that the said in his reply B.P. said "Truthfully, I'm probably done purchasing new locomotives....period."  That's essentially giving up, although he may have additional, and very valid, reasons for doing so.  He's now in a position to find a new hobby to invest in, hopefully one that's less stressful, and one in which he can count on the manufacturers to produce quality stuff.

Yes, but he doesn't want a fix.  He wants it fixed.  Although most might be, some of us are not tinkerers.

If these failures were all from one dealer, I would definitely consider using another dealer.  Perhaps a dealer has a very violent UPS or Fedex pickup driver?

I get what you're saying.....but these three are from Pat's Trains, TrainWorld, and Mr. Muffins Trains, respectively.

Prior to the VL Challnger, I thought I had pretty good "luck" with new locomotives.  Now, I'm on a bit of losing streak.

Not really.  I have about 15 or so medium to large steamers......including all that I really want.  I have plenty of engines to run if I never buy another one.

While I don't mind tinkering, I'm pretty sure that I void the warranty if I crack the shell open.  I've only had this engine for about two months and have only been trying to run it for 72 hours or so.  I still have the factory warranty in my back pocket and I'd be silly to ruin that.

Were I out of the warranty period, I'd be happy to have at it.

"hese three are from Pat's Trains, TrainWorld, and Mr. Muffins Trains, respectively."

So it's not the dealer UPS/USPS/Fedex personnel.

Could it be the personnel at your end?  Have you received other non-functional or damaged products from Amazon or other distant vendors?  One hears of occasional delivery personnel who literally throw packages on the brick or concrete door step or asphalt driveway.  Probably rare, but a possibility.

I wonder if frequency of shipping damage to our delicate products is higher than one might hope for.  I say this because there seem to be individuals with remarkably crappy repetitive product malfunction or aesthetic damage experiences.  Maybe it's just luck in some cases, pure coincidence if you will.

I do almost all my shopping on-line and whether it's model trains, model airplanes, food, clothing, electronics or household goods, I've been remarkably lucky so far.  Almost no damaged or non-functional stuff, and I'm talking 40-60 items (mostly not trains) per year, maybe more.  I suspect our toys are particularly vulnerable because of all the delicate detail parts and the electromechanical nature of the locomotives.

Perhaps I'm jinxing myself so I should shut up .

Very few problems with packages on my end.  All three engines that I have/will send back arrived in great physical shape.

The 5011 that I'm dealing with right now arrived in top notch shape with excellent fit and finish.  Sound is good.  Smoke is good.  Conventional and LC operation each get an A+.   Outer shipping box is actually....pristine.
