My S3's cab light started flashing 4 times (definitely 4) which the manual says is not applicable. But I guess on mine its applicable. It happened consistently after the power was first applied to the track and the engine was turned on. Four resets cleared it, and then it would not re-occur until the power was cycled again. Everything seemed to be working fine.  When I turned the smoke unit off it did not happen. So I took apart the engine and tested the smoke unit. One of the resistors was way higher than the eight ohm spec. The other was fine. I decided to replace them both. I tested it for about 20 minutes and the problem has not re-occured.

Does anybody have the technical knowledge to tell me what causes the legacy board to flash the cab light 4 times after start-up?

Marty,

Thank you for the information. I replaced the aux smoke unit unit resistor and the problem went away. The cylinder steam was working but the resistor was at about 15 ohms on my meter. I wonder why they don't put that in the manual?

Typically it goes...

1 Blink motor drive

2 Blink main smoke unit element

3 Blink main smoke unit fan motor

4 Blink Aux smoke unit element

5 Blink Aux smoke unit fan motor

My guess is your cylinder smoke wasn't working.

Yes - the S3 is definitely one of the best engines lionel has built as of late. I would but it at #1 or #2 on my list of most treasured steamers. One thing it has that no other engine has is the self-adjust drawbar that keeps the tender much closer to the engine. It looks so much better. If only the MARS light were wired correctly it would be perfect......

This is one of the engines that Lionel SHOULD definitely do another run of. I'm not sure why it wasn't labeled a "Vision" line product. Seems to me the drawbar was a new feature which is what supposedly qualifies something to be in the vision line. Even the new Big Boy with all of its new features lacks the drawbar. When you look at any of your engines after getting the S3 they all look wrong - some worse than others. I think it should be a standard on all steamers going forward. It works flawlessly and with no additional maintenance. There really is no reason not to include it on any new tooling going forward.

Glad you were able to finally get one. I'm sure you will enjoy it. The new Milwaukee Road Hiawatha cars look great behind it. There are still some available if you are interested.
